We took the Mt. Roberts Tramway while our cruise ship was docked in Juneau. The Tramway terminal is immediately as you step off the boat at the dock. No need to pre-buy tickets, or pre-book this as an excursion. Luckily, it was a clear day while we were there. The views from the top are incredible. But, if it were cloudy, the price for the ride might not be worth it. The trails are nicely maintained and provide great scenary. You can rent an audio system to listen to information as you hike, but we decided to skip that. The maps and signs along the way were informative enough for us. There was also a bald eagle on display at the top. After spending an hour or so wondering around at the top, we decided to hike the 2.5 mile trail down to the bottom instead of taking the tram. This was great excercise but not recommended for anyone that's out of shape or unprepared. Make sure that you have plenty of time, bring water and wear good hiking shoes if you decide to hike down. The trail is steep and in many places slippery with mud. Also, be warned that the end of the trail does NOT take you back to the cruise ship dock. Instead, you end up in a neighborhood about 1.5 miles from the dock. But, the ships were so large that it was easy to find our way back, even though we didn't have a city map.
