My fiancee and I visited Alaska and drove over 2400 miles by ourselves in 8 days from Anchorage to Haines and back, plus side trips to Valdez and Seward along the way. The stretch from Anchorage to Tok was the longest part of the journey and from Tok to Haines was the most treacherous. Tok had to be our stopping point and we planned it that way well in advance of traveling. But the only motel we could find that was in our budget was Young's Motel, which received a luke warm review in our travel guide book. So we were afraid of what we'd find in this remote outpost of a town, but, honestly, even though we thought it would be the worst place to stay on earth, it was actually far and away the best place we stayed during the entire time in Alaska. And it was actually a really cool place. They had free wireless internet (FREE) and we brought a laptop to download digi pics as we went along, so we were able to keep in touch with friends and family while our cell phones were out of area. They had cable TV, too. And outside it was pitch dark--darker than I've ever seen--and you could hear wolves howling. How cool is that! The restaurant on site is a wonderful warm, clean and surprisingly modern place with great food for all three meals. I wouldn't mind getting snowbound at Tok's during the winter and it was certainly a pleasure to be there in the late summer. I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back.
