My fiancee and I visited Alaska and drove over 2400 miles by ourselves in 8 days from Anchorage to Haines and back, plus side trips to Valdez and Seward along the way. The stretch from Anchorage to Tok was the longest part of the journey and from Tok to Haines was the most treacherous. Tok had to be our stopping point and we planned it that way well in advance of traveling. But the only motel we could find that was in our budget was Young's Motel, which received a luke warm review in our travel guide book. So we were afraid of what we'd find in this remote outpost of a town, but, honestly, even though we thought it would be the worst place to stay on earth, it was actually far and away the best place we stayed during the entire time in Alaska. And it was actually a really cool place. They had free wireless internet (FREE) and we brought a laptop to download digi pics as we went along, so we were able to keep in touch with friends and family while our cell phones were out of area. They had cable TV, too. And outside it was pitch dark--darker than I've ever seen--and you could hear wolves howling. How cool is that! The restaurant on site is a wonderful warm, clean and surprisingly modern place with great food for all three meals. I wouldn't mind getting snowbound at Tok's during the winter and it was certainly a pleasure to be there in the late summer. I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back.

The room I had (19) was spacious with 2 queen beds, but is the most basic of lodging, with no amenities – notably no bathroom fan, coffee maker or pen and paper. The TV is tiny, and the phone and clock are inconveniently located on the opposite side of the room from the beds. Obviously designed for budget travellers passing quickly through. Despite the issues, the convenience of having the very good Fast Eddie's Restaurant on the property makes Young's good value for people in that category, particularly in the winter.

We drove from Seward to Juneau and back and had to stop somewhere in between and had family stay at Young's previously....not for the rooms per se but for the tasty food and friendly staff. Which we found to be true.

The rooms aren't state of the art but they are clean and we had everything they promised. If you want the Hyatt at Young's prices your're NOT going to get it, but if you want Alaskan Hospitality....especially in the winter when they have plug-ins for your car so your engine doesn't freeze up at 50 below zero...a good pizza and beer (or in my case a steak dinner and a GREAT salad bar!) then Young's is the place to be.

I plan another trip in July and just HOPE I can get a reservation....ummm I can taste that Alaskan Amber beer already! Sign me: An innkeeper in Seward and 50 year Alaskan resident!

When it's one of the only games in town, I guess it becomes more acceptable. Old-fashioned, thin walls, bathrooms need remodeling, toilet ran all night. A good price, though, by Alaskan standards.

“Always Dependable!”

I have lived in Alaska for 23 years and travel extensively over the road system year-round. I have been staying at Young's for well over 15 years now and have yet to have a bad experience. It is wonderful to see Young's Motel appear on the horizon in the winter--always warm and friendly! I also love Fast Eddy's restaurant being right there with its great food. You've gotta have the steak sandwich dinner and the light breakfast--they are both great. I only have one complaint after all these years: Young's needs to get a toll free reservations number and give AK residents a price break in the summer. I will continue to use Young's as long as I drive the highway.
