“Wintersun in a fantastic city”

Protea Hotel Victoria Junction

Travelled to Cape Town with my wife in late January with Virgin Airways having booked flight and first three nights hotel via Expedia.

What can I say - the place is fantastic. Scenicly stunning with a Table Mountain backdrop (and yes, the tablecloth is a sight to behold!). Superb sightseeing ... and despite pre-travel worries, felt very safe.

Victoria Junction hotel is in what you could say is 'an up and coming' area but still fine. Only about 10 minutes walk from the V&A Waterfront. We stayed in the large loft rooms which were comfortable and interesting and worth the supplement.

Hotel has a small outdoor pool - but it's quite out of the way and not obvioulsly noticeable - and it's a short walk across a car park/road.

Top tips: 1. eat out of the hotels - the cost is cheap, the quality phenominal and the experience is uusally first class.
2. Go up Table Mountain as soon as you can - the weather and cloud can change in an instant.
3. Robben Island - very popular location the tours book up in advance so if you are time limited you really do need to get in quick.
4. Hire a car and explore the surrounding areas - Stellenbosch, Franchoek and Cape of good Hope are all well worth investigating and are an easy drive from the city.
5. V&A Waterfront is a great tourist draw - lively, fun and safe.

Would I go back? In an instant!!!!!

“Great Place to Rest”

Myself and my wife stayed at this hotel last year November. I have to say that it was extremely clean and had a trendy ambience to it. Not to mention the staff, they were excellent and friendly. When we left we had 4 or 5 staff members who came out to the taxi to greet us bye. Courtesy and respect goes a long way. The location of the hotel is great because all of the attractions and clubs aren't too far. Their pretty much a hop and a skip away. I'm from Toronto, Canada and one of the things that I noticed was that the area wasn't dangerous at all. Just ensure that you walk outside in the dark with a friend. A little common sense also goes a long way. The breakfast was definitely not the kind of continental breakfast that you get here in Canada or the United States. Breakfast was the best that I've eaten in a long time out of a hotel. All in all I would definitely return to this hotel again for 3 weeks. I would also recommended this hotel to anyone whose looking for inexpensive, classy and chique hotel.

“Not a holiday hotel”

Protea Hotel Victoria Junction

13 Mar 2007
5/6 found this review helpful

We were booked into this hotel for 6 nights but checked out after 1 and moved to another hotel. I am surprised that there are some positive reviews of ths hotel, the only good thing I would say is that the staff were pleasant enough and helpful. Let's move onto the problems:

It is not situated in a good part of town, it's actually a 10-15 minute walk to the waterfront down some scruffy roads. The hotel itself is dark and dingy and is 'over-themed'. The internet charges (wifi) are the highest I have come across in an hotel. But the thing I was most shocked by was the pool area. This is reached by crossing the car park and by getting a guard to unlock the gate. The pool itself is about 6ft (2m) wide - 2 people swimming in this pool would find it difficult. If you don't believe me have a careful look at Protea's website and look at the pool picture, you can get an idea of scale by comparing the sunbed sizes to the pool size and of course the photo is cleverly taken to avoid the bad views. This hotel is probably ok for one night if you are on business, but not for a holiday.

We moved to another Protea hotel - The President - which couldn't be more different, bright and fresh, sea views, lovely pool area and great staff.

“Nice Hotel, aimed for business travelers”

Protea Hotel Victoria Junction

12 Mar 2007
2/3 found this review helpful

The Victoria Junction is a nice hotel with an interesting minimalistic character. Although aimed for people traveling on business, it offers a convenient location for any tourist visiting Cape Town. It is relatively close to the Waterfront and despite some comments regarding safety, I believe the area it is situated is ok to walk even at night (I did so with my wife).

The main problem was the rooms' small window overlooking the residential building on the opposite side of the hotel. I would rate its restaurant and the cleaning services below average, while the people at the front desk were very helpful with everything we asked (maybe too helpful when it came to booking day trips!).

In general it left us with an above average (but not too above) experience.
