We stayed at Derwent House for 8 days split over 2 trips and really can't recommend it highly enough. We were having a bit of a traumatic time whilst staying there and Jo and Carol couldn't have been more helpful and really made us feel at home.
The location is good. It's a quiet, residential area, but is just round the corner from all the restaurants on Kloof St and close to the cable car station. We felt completely comfortable walking at night to the restaurants.
Breakfast was very good. Particularly liked the fruit salad.
The rooms are lovely and the beds are huge and very comfortable. Lovely little touch (and very important in Cape Town's weather!) to get chocolates and the next day's weather forecast on the bed every night.
The communal areas are beautifully decorated, packed with guidebooks and home to the free teas, coffee, cakes (yum!!), port and sherry, as well as the honesty bar. And guests actually use these areas which is probably one of the things which makes it feel much more homely.
And the best thing was the non-stop flow of helpful advice and information. Jo and Carol make lots of recommendations for restaurants, bars and trips and will make bookings for pretty much everything you want to do. We only had to say that we were looking to hire a car and the next thing we knew it was being delivered to the hotel in a few hours (and at a very reasonable rate!). And when we went to explore the wine region we got a hand-drawn map with specific recommendations of vinyards to visit.
Absolutely wonderful - thanks Carol & Jo!!
