.... been so surprised to read some of the less positive reviews about Whale Cottage, Hermanus, but then I suppose you often only hear complaints from some people.

We booked our stay very last minute, as we were driving from Cape Town and arrived late in the evening. It was easy and Barry was very cheery and welcoming.

Yes, to get into town at night if you are going out to dinner you have to make a very short drive, as you do with most the B&Bs in Hermanus, but in the day it is an easy walk along the magnificent cliffs.

Whale Cottage is well decorated and immaculate. It was a pity we only had a brief one night stay. We went shark cage diving very early and Barry was kind enough to let us leave our bags, stop off and get changed on our way back to Cape Town, which was much appreciated, as I was flying home that evening.

Great night and a very pleasant stay!

If they have Rooms a-whale-able I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this B&B!

Hermanus is a beautiful seaside town and (in our opinion) there's no better place to have as a base to enjoy it than Whale Cottage. With the warmest of welcomes from Barry & Hilary our stay in WCH got off to a great start. With a party of eight descending on them all at once they calmly sorted us out before letting us choose our rooms. A difficult choice as all the rooms are very comfortable with everything you need. My wife and I settled on The Whale Room, which we would highly recommend as it has a lovely balcony with excellent views to the ocean.

After a most enjoyable early evening stroll along the coastal path (just a few yards from the doors of Whale Cottage) we enjoyed a sundowner by the pool before heading off for a meal in Town.

Morning greeted us with excellent weather and an even better breakfast feast. A choice of cereals, fresh fruit, yogurts, breads and preserves followed by delicious eggs, bacon and tomato cooked up by our wonderful hosts.

The only thing we missed were the Whales, we were a bit early this year. Oh well, maybe next time when we will certainly return to this wonderful B&B.

“Ant infested and run-down stay away ”

Do not stay in The Whale Cottage in Hermanus. It was ant infested and run-down. The beds are unusually small.
Even when we insisted on moving rooms, we were not satisfied with the quality of the establishment compared to what the brochure falsely advertised. Not walking distance to Hermanus as promised by Chris the owner of this horrible chain.
Barry was a kind sweet man, but he cannot make up for this dump !!
Stay away.

“Dont book the Lighthouse Room!!”

First of all we do like Barry who is running the Whale Cottage in Hermanus. He really tried hard to make our stay enjoyable. On the other Hand our Room (Light House Room) was a disaster. Not 100 % clean and with a very old and small (really small!) bathroom. Money has to be spend to bring it back to the promised standart. The breakfast was ok but not spectacular. The whole place is nothing for advanced travellers who like to have a certain quality. Cheap and nothing to recommend. The furniture was and everything in the room was cheap. The pool was dirty when we came but has been cleaned. You do need a car because the B & B is far away from the City Centre or Beaches where people can swim (3 to 5 kmtrs.).
