“Excellent Boutique Hotel”

1555 Malabia House

I spent 2 weeks at the Malabia House in 2004 as part of a 2-month stay in Argentina. The Malabia House was far and away the nicest place I stayed during the trip. From the moment I got there, the staff was so helpful getting me settled, helping me get local currency, checking my email, and arranging for transportation.

The house is a beautiful serene setting in a hip part of the city, SoHo/Palermo. There are tons of excellent restaurants nearby, and the window shopping is great. For Americans, a top-notch meal including wine and dessert is extremely affordable due to the exchange rate. Every night the hotel staff gave great suggestions on where to eat and what to do.

The minimalist architecture, beautiful interiors, good breakfasts, and amazing staff made this is an amazing place to spend a couple of weeks. I tend to like smaller, boutique hotels with a lot of personality and found Malabia House to be just that. If I find myself heading to Buenos Aires again, I will definitely stay there.

We booked Malibia House for a stay in BA as it seemed to offer a high-end, luxury stay in a cool neighbourhood. And this is just what we got. Welcomed in by Juan and taken to a room with food and drink, we were talked through the area, given recommendations etc while our bags were handled – it felt like we were important!

This approach continued throughout the week where we were made to feel like the staff would do anything we needed or required – whether it was advice or organising reservations etc for us. The hotel itself is not “luxurious” in the way many western travellers would expect as, although the rooms look cool, they are not perfect as they don’t have external windows and many have bathrooms down the hall – ours was in our room but was very small as a result. However the standard of service in regards housekeeping etc help lift the overall feel. Breakfast is great (as long as a massive group don’t hit the dining room all at once) and the free internet has a cool room (although the keyboards are worn!).

As a UK visitor, it was certainly value for money because it was a great, relaxing place to stay thanks to the hard work of the young, friendly and English-speaking staff who really make the place what it is – a great place to stay in a cool neighbourhood.

The degree of service and the helpfulness of the staff here is truely excellent. They always went out of their way to help us book reservations, restaurants, taxis etc. One of our rooms was on the main floor across from the kitchen and was a little noisy in the morning. The other room was on the top floor at the back and was the quietest of the trip. This is a former convent that has been remodeled into a top notch B&B or small hotel boutique hotel. Take you pick. The staff ratio is over 1:1 per room. The rooms are attractively decorated and look good to the eye, however sometimes the design is to precious to be practical. I.E. small countertop bowl sinks on a wood counter as the only sink in the room. I would highly recommend this as a very comfortable and easy way to adjust to Buenos Aires. You will have no lack of very good (not to say cheap) restaurants within walking distance of this hotel. If you want to save on the price, pay in cash at checkout. It was a 20% discount for us.

    • Liked — The staff service, truly amazing
    • Disliked — To small sinks in room, towels not fluffy. Nitpicking here.

My wife and I stayed at the Malabia House for 5 nights in May 2007. I cannot possibly say enough about our experience...from the excellent location to the friendly and helpful staff to the excellent furnishings, this is the best B$B I've ever seen on any continent. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in BA. Palermo Soho is the best neighborhood in all the city (less stuffy and sterile than Recoleta) and it's the center for the best shopping in town. It's also absolutely safe - the 24hr security guards are great.
