There is not a great deal to see and do in Scottsdale but play golf, lay in the sun, go to a spa, shop and eat. Locals say "there is not much culture here."

A visit to Taliesin West - a piece of culture - is interesting, informative & worth while. At the same time TW is surprising for a number of reasons. when you learn that Wright lived at Taliesin for 6 months a year for many years in what can only be described as a glorified camp site - you have to be astounded. Here is the most successful architect of the time who used the cheapest materials and built a place that had to be horrible to live in for himself.

Nothing you expect from seeing residences and commercial buildings designed by and built under the direction of Frank Lloyd Wright prepares you for how basic - almost privative - Taliesin was for many years.

Though it is explainable how he first built Taliesin West - how and why he kept it as basic and privative as it is defy imagination.

The tours we took - my wife on one with our daughter and me on a different one - were good but we both hoped to see more, hear more and learn more. They have a 3hr. tour that is supposed to be excellent but neither of us could make this with a child in tow. Be aware of the tour limitations when you select your tour.

Unfortunately, the impression we left with was that the FLW Foundation & Association who run the school and all the associated businesses including the tours and gift/book shop are not managing the income from these enterprises well. The book store at Taliesin West and book stores through out the world sell hundreds of thousands of books about Wright. Wrights foundation has licensed an uncountable number of products. The revenue stream from these various enterprises must be very very substantial. Yet with all the income streams Taliesin is in dilapidated condition and in massive need of work to prevent it from becoming a dump.

Our suggestion is go see this landmark and join the Association. Perhaps with more patronage the integrity of the property can be reinstated.

While the admission for the 90 min tour may seem high, it's totally worth it. You learn a lot about Frank Lloyd Wright and get to see his work up close and personal, walking through where he lived, worked, and entertained. Taliesin refers to itself as his 'living lab' and it's where he could try out his ideas, which were many and quite innovative. (Several of which are taken for granted today)

We had a great time, if you like architecture or design in general you will want to visit this historic gem.

The price of the 90 minute tour is way too much,but..since it's a non-profit org. I just
paid it and shook my head.

Our tour guide was named Michael and he was very, very good. Knew his Frank Lloyd
Wright and was able to handle almost any crazy question our group threw at him. There
was something (can't recall what) that he did not know, but he just admitted it instead of
making something up. He also knew who would know the information and steered the
questioner over to them after the tour.

Since this was an ever evolving home and work space past FLW's death, you don't get a fix on any one era and I think that the board might want to think about that some more.
I don't have a solution or real opinion, just that it's all too "unformed" at the moment. They
need more photos or artifacts from their archives in the house and offices.

Terribly hot and I wished I had taken an unbrella when it was offered to me in the
gift shop. Make sure to take and drink water, the tour is in and out of doors and you
will need it.

The staff at the gift shop was nice and ready to assist us with items behind locked
case doors. But,we were 2 of maybe a dozen people there,so it might be a different
story at another time of the year.

Gift store prices were astronomical, but that didn't seem to stop anyone from buying
FLW trinkets to take home.

It's worth going to once. But once you've seen the place, you've seen it. There isn't
enough there to make me want to go back. The stories were the most interesting part.

My husband and I are both fans of the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright so we were very excited to have the opportunity to visit Taliesin West since we were going to be in the area on business. We have several books on him, his architecture, etc., and we have visited some of the structures he designed, but actually visiting somewhere he himself lived was fantastic and not to be missed! We learned even more about him from our knowledgable guide, and it really did take our appreciation of him to a new level. We are now talking about planning a visit to Fallingwater next, and we also hope to get back to the Wisconsin/Chicago area in the future to see even more of his buildings and to visit Taliesin.

I am glad I went, but would not recommend to anyone not an architecture fan . I was interested to learn about FLW as the icon he is, but felt the tour was 10 minutes squeed into 90 minutes. But I am not a student of architecture.
