There is not a great deal to see and do in Scottsdale but play golf, lay in the sun, go to a spa, shop and eat. Locals say "there is not much culture here."
A visit to Taliesin West - a piece of culture - is interesting, informative & worth while. At the same time TW is surprising for a number of reasons. when you learn that Wright lived at Taliesin for 6 months a year for many years in what can only be described as a glorified camp site - you have to be astounded. Here is the most successful architect of the time who used the cheapest materials and built a place that had to be horrible to live in for himself.
Nothing you expect from seeing residences and commercial buildings designed by and built under the direction of Frank Lloyd Wright prepares you for how basic - almost privative - Taliesin was for many years.
Though it is explainable how he first built Taliesin West - how and why he kept it as basic and privative as it is defy imagination.
The tours we took - my wife on one with our daughter and me on a different one - were good but we both hoped to see more, hear more and learn more. They have a 3hr. tour that is supposed to be excellent but neither of us could make this with a child in tow. Be aware of the tour limitations when you select your tour.
Unfortunately, the impression we left with was that the FLW Foundation & Association who run the school and all the associated businesses including the tours and gift/book shop are not managing the income from these enterprises well. The book store at Taliesin West and book stores through out the world sell hundreds of thousands of books about Wright. Wrights foundation has licensed an uncountable number of products. The revenue stream from these various enterprises must be very very substantial. Yet with all the income streams Taliesin is in dilapidated condition and in massive need of work to prevent it from becoming a dump.
Our suggestion is go see this landmark and join the Association. Perhaps with more patronage the integrity of the property can be reinstated.
