This is a very clean hotel. Room was great. Has a big pool and a larger-than-usual hot tub.

I'm writing a review because when we checked in, I specifically asked if the hotel had a pool that was working. The front desk guy said yes. But when we got to the pool (I have four kids), it was freezing, unswimmable. And the hot tub was broken.

The manager told us to come back in about a half hour, which we did. The pool thermometer said the water was 85 degrees, but a quick touch of the hand proved that number to be waaaaaaay too high. Even the manager agreed. He told us to come back in the morning.

I told him we wouldn't have time to swim in the morning, that the sole reason we chose his hotel over the many others in the area is because it had an indoor pool. I told him I'd like some compensation for the problem since what we were getting was not what we were promised.

He said he'd give me 20% off the total, which came to about $30. I told him I'd be satisfied with $50. And while he clearly did not want to give me a refund of that size, we were renting 2 rooms (adjoining) from him, so he could afford to. And, without any further haggling, he gave me the refund. And five packs of chewing gum upon checkout!

So I promised I'd write this review. The problem was inconvenient, but the manager worked with me and the issue was resolved to my satisfaction. That isn't always the case.

“Brinjal pickle”

The Howard Johnson, got my tour group out of a hole when the Holiday Inn, Williams resold our rooms. Other than the smell of Brinjal pickle, the hotel was conveniently located and was reasonably clean. Pool was small but the Jacuzzi was a nice touch. Lack of breakfast was a downer. OK overall.

“OVER-PRICED, OVER-RATED”

Howard Johnson Express Inn - Williams

After checking with the Holiday Inn, Rodeway Inn and several other hotels in Williams, we stopped into Howard Johnson. We needed 4 rooms with two beds, preferably non-smoking and none of the other hotels had more than two rooms available. Every hotel other than HoJo quoted a price range from $49 to $79. HoJo did have the four rooms available but was charging $110 per room. When I asked about a AAA discount, the desk clerk knocked off $5. Two parties in our group decided on the $49 hotel while we decided on Howard Johnson. After making it home a day later I decided to check their website and found that the same room, for the middle of the week availability, ranged from $69 to $79. And what did we get for $105 + tax? Bathrooms with the wallpaper stripped from the walls, holes cut into the bathroom ceiling, ratty shower curtains and beds that seemed to have the same sheets from the previous guests. I think we were royally ripped off but had no other recourse after we left. Suffice to say, I will not be staying at a Howard Johnson again. For the price, it is not even close to the rooms we stayed in at “The Views Inn Sedona” a few days before. For $69, the rooms were larger, cleaner and very well decorated.

“"ewww, what's that smell?"”

That's what my son asked when we walked into the main hallway and what we asked ourselves during our stay here in April '03. We never found out and it's probably better that way. The front desk staff was rude- she ignored me while on a personal (?) phone call. When she finally paid attention to me she complained about a family who had just checked in with a "noisy brat" The continental breakfast was pitiful- stale boxed donuts and lukewarm coffee. The indoor pool was nice but we had to walk outside to another building to get to it. Pros: It was cheap & it was close to the depot for the Grand Canyon Railway. We thought we'd save a few bucks ($92, to be exact) and stay here instead of the hotel affiliated with the train but I guess you get what you pay for.
