Were originally supposed to stay Friday and Saturday, but our flight was delayed out of O'Hare and we did not want to make the drive from Sky Harbor to Williams in the middle of the night. The hotel allowed us to change our stay on Friday night from two nights arrving Friday to one night arriving Saturday even though there was a 48 hour cancellation. This was a gracious gesture that was very appreciated. We stayed at a Sleep Inn at the airport before making the AM drive to the Grand Canyon. We spent all day there and got some great shots in the evening sun and some breathtaking shots of sunset.
We arrived at the hotel very late in the evening Saturday. So late that I was sorry I was not able to take advantage of some of the excursions that they offer. Apparently the hotel is on a ranch and they offer several adventures including a horseback riding and other things. The stables were right behind the hotel, but we could not see much because of how late we arrived. We were the last ones to arrive because the front desk said, "Ahh, you must be our last reservation. Luckily this is not the amazing race and you don't have to go home. Your room is ready to go!" I found the front desk agent to have a good sense of humor and very pleasant and knowledgable.
The hotel's restaurant had closed for the evening, and the wedding reception upstairs was still in full swing, but the desk agent could sense our hunger and before I could ask, he listed all of the restaurants in Williams where we could get a bite to eat before they closed. He was right too. The restaurants in town all locked up at 10pm. I was able to get some food at around 9:50pm and they promptly turned off the drive thru lights as soon as I got my order.
We arrived at night, so the drive up to the hotel could be a little tricky on the windy driveway, but it has great curb appeal. Our room was unusually large and very quiet. The entrance setup is unique with the upstairs room entrances facing the highway (front side) and the downstairs entrances (ground level) facing the back of the buidling. However, all the stairs were accessed from the back, so parking was difficult. The wonderful evening breeze made it nice to stand overlooking the valley from the porch-like balcony/terrace/hallway. The wedding reception was in a seperate part of the building near the desk and restaurant, but we never explored that part of the hotel since we were tired after a long, but awe inspiring day at the Grand Canyon. We retired soon after check-in.
We left near dawn the next day and took the scenic route to Sedona. I highly recommend this drive in the AM as the sun rises! We scheduled a jeep tour with Pink Jeep Tours and enjoyed that thoroughly, but it you deal with neck or back pain, or easily suffer whiplash, this is not an adventure for you. It's a Jeep thing. You wouldn't understand.
