Facing a long drive ( with four children ) we decided to break it with a two day stop in Portumna.
I had been reccomended this hotel by friends , it did not dissappoint.
Receptionist was charming and helpful . Rooms spotless , children wanted to know why our towels at home were not as soft!
Leisure complex spotless. Hotel appears to be used a lot by very friendly , hepful local people .
Breakfast excellent , our children ( boys ) consume vast amounts of food ! It was never a problem. Playground and a pretty town added to the whole break.
We will be back.

Stayed here for three nights with my wife, son, and nephew. The fact that it slept 4 people comfortably is a plus for any good hotel in Ireland. The room on the top floor was clean, comfortable, and cool. However, the bathroom ceiling evidenced numerous leaks that were poorly repaired.
The restaurant has a small, but pleasant atmosphere and the breakfast had numerous items to offer. Dinner one night was not good. We were the first in and the last served, and the food was like leather. We were visiting friends that live in Loughrea, and they were surprised as they have only had excellent meals the times they eat here. The waiter was apologetic and removed the charge, and this may have had to do with ordering meat well done.
The area around the hotel is very pleasant for walking, and our boys loved the large pool. The lodges appear to be a good option for large families on extended stays.

I'm just back from a week in the lodges @ Shannon Oaks. We had ten people (adults and children) for the week. The houses are in good condition, maybe could do with a refresh/lick of paint, although in saying that, some of the other houses had work underway so perhaps ours was next. The bedrooms are a good size aside from the fact that three of the double rooms are 4ft beds so might be smaller than you re used. One of the rooms upstairs had a very small wardrobe and one of the others had none so not ideal if you re there for a week. While adequate, the living area was a bit small if all 10 people wanted to stay in / watch tv etc. The weather was great which meant we were able to take advantage of the outdoor deck / seating. Hotel leisure centre is available for use, theres a playground for kids and you re right on the door of the park for walks. We had a great time, went pitch & putting, go kart racing, walking in the forest, out on boat on the lake etc. In general, lots to do, well suited to families / groups and would definitely go back

Had a nice stay here for a wedding. Very professional job all round. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The town itself is small but a very short distance from the front door. There are a few good pubs, but not much in the way of restaurants in the town. The bar in the hotel is usually quite busy for the weddings and on the weekends and there is music. There is also a pool, sauna, steam room, gym and jacuzzi which are pretty good. The forest is right behind and is quite nice for walks. All in all, a good experience.

I had a look into one of the chalets and they also seemed very comfortable and spacious. Probably good for a large family or a big group.

“Sleep in your car!!”

Shannon Oaks Hotel & Country Club

We stayed in the Shannon oaks as a last resort as we had a wedding in the locality. Firstly we were quoted €180 for the room per night but by waiting until the day before the wedding the room was suddenly €120.
On arrival the room was fine, but as we were falling asleep at 11, the band in the function room commenced murdering their musical instruments & the racket started thumping through the room. We rang reception who told us that the band would be finished at 2.30am & offered us a room change. So at midnight we moved rooms. Our new room was an adjoining room (didn't think anything of it & went to bed) at 2.30am (presumably when the "band" finished) the 5 or so women who were staying next door arrived back & preceded to talk, shriek, laugh & shout until 4.30am. I was able to hear exactly what they were saying. So girls, if you're reading this don't be too hard on your fat friend in Turkey who burst the Lilo. p.s. you guys didn't exactly sound like supermodels yourselves.
The next morning after zero sleep & no room service facilities, we went down to breakfast to be confronted with the most miserable buffet imaginable. I badly needed a coffee but was informed that the machine was broken & was presented with Nescafe (which for all you caffeine addicts out there will know is NOT coffee!!!) we ordered some bacon & eggs but they were inedible (at least the microwave gets good use) so for breakfast we had a glass of water & a slice of toast each.
Upon checkout we were informed that they had taken a Coke/Club orange off our bill as a way of saying sorry for the noise/room change......WOW, €3.70 from €172 (including food)……some discount!! I had quite a job resisting the urge to scream bloody murder, but we were late for the wedding & i didn't want to ruin my make-up.
All i can say is they must have commissioned 3 more brass stars (it barely deserves one) for the sign on the front gate because this was one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in. There seems to be a crowd of teenagers in charge. The only one that didn't break into a fit of giggles every time we asked for something was the poor lad who informed me that the coffee machine was broken, probably because he saw the tears welling in my eyes.
Well, i think that covers it, our friends staying there agreed 100% with our encounter. We all had a startlingly similar experience in this hotel (hah…hotel?!?!?!?!)
Go to a nice B&B or a real 4 star hotel or better yet sleep in your car......save your money because you may as well flush it down the toilet if you're going to stay here.
