I stayed at the shannon oaks hotel recently for a wedding. I thought that the bar was very nice, with some interesting features. The room the wedding was in was stunning. Other than this though, I found the hotel disappointing. The bedrooms are dull and the decor is old fashioned for a 4 star hotel. There was wallpaper in the bathroom! I didn't feel that the room was totally clean, there was cigarette ash in the toilet bowl and on the toilet seat when we arrived and the pillows were like rocks. Also, there was NO hot water available the morning after the wedding, I had to have a cold shower and it was freezing. When I mentioned this to the receptionist I was told that the water was re-heating again. I feel this is totally uncceptable for a large hotel. No matter what happens you should always be able to have a hot shower at a hotel. For this reason, I wouldn't stay at the shannon oaks hotel.

Stayed in the Shannon Oaks Hotel, over the Xmas period/Had a very enjoybale stay, staff were all very helpful and friendly and food was great. Loved the food in the Bisto in the evening, would recomend, especially to families to eat there. Staff at reception were very helpul and friendly. The Leisure Centre is fantastic, they have a great pool. There's also a Beauticans in the hotel which was great. Overall had a fantastic trip and would higly recomend this hotel. Great place to go if you are looking for a relaxing break.

We have stayed in this hotel many times but have recently been informed that it has changed ownership. As it's the best hotel in the area we decided to book in anyway for the New year holiday as we have always found it to be of good quality. We made our booking by phone and requested interconnecting rooms for our children. I confirmed this by phone a few days before our arrival. When we arrived they couldn't accommodate us and would only give us 2 rooms 'nearby' to each other. It was either that or rooms on the smoking floor - not acceptable for young lungs. What could we do? The hotel was very quiet - and judging by the guests at breakfast the next morning it was very underbooked, so I think they could have made more of an effort to re-arrange their room allocation. It has definitely lost its gloss, no shortbread in the rooms anymore!! As it's the only hotel in its class in the vicinity it will continue to do well, but as a regular guest, I would have expected more of any effort on their part - as it's not cheap by any means.

We stayed one night on the way through to the South West of Ireland.

We didn't use the hotels extensive facilities but the bar and restaurant were fine.

The rooms were clean and of a reasonable quality.

The hotel is very quiet and the beds were nice and firm.

Breakfast was fine - bit over cooked and lacking any TLC that you get from smaller hotels and B&B's.

Portumna didn't seem like it had much to offer - maybe this was becuase we arrived in the dark and there was fog the following morning.
