There is no doubt that you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time!! Was my feeling after reading the wide variety of reviews on this hotel before I made my booking. After only a couple of days there I was pleased that I had ignored the negative reviews.
I can only envy and wonder at what magnificent surroundings and sumptuous 3* Hotel food critics of the Nerja Club must have experienced in other 3*hotels. As for me, after 30 years of extensive foreign travel the Nerja Club Food rates very highly indeed - I have stayed in hotels with higher star ratings with significantly inferior food quality. Breakfast offered a sufficient variety of choices, hot and cold, which more that equalled anything I have experienced in any UK/Irish, let alone foreign 3/4 star hotels. At dinner there was a pleasing and varied choice in starters, salad and main course; which in the 2 weeks I stayed was not replicated(sadly, as I really wanted to have the delicious Canelloni,Spag Bol, and Weiner Schnitzel etc again!) My only minor criticism was the limited choice of desert, but as there was always delicious fresh fruit and 3 flavours of ice cream it's hard to really complain!
Our room situation was ideal as my elderly mother has mobility difficulties and despite the various warnings of several steps in the hotel, she only had to negotiate 4 to get from our room to the pool area, other wise it was the lift to the dinning room. Again a minor criticism was the lack of soundproofing in the rooms, which may annoy a light sleeper. The hotel was clean, the staff friendly and helpful any request was dealt with pleasantly and efficiently, and while the decor may be rather outdated it was well looked after.
The Happy Hour and the nightly entertainment were much appreciated and very enjoyable as well as typically professional Costa entertainment. It also finished at a reasonably early hour of 11.30.While perhaps not appealing to those very much under 40, it was grand for those of us of a little more senior years and ideal for those even older who were mostly confined to the hotel.
While the hotel is some way out of the centre, which in some ways makes its position more attractive, it is still possible to walk into town - 15 mins or so at a good pace. A taxi back after sight seeing weariness sets in costs 6 Euro - there is a straight road back but has a slight incline.
I found the hotel perfect for mine and my mother's needs. There was even a sun lounge which was extremely useful during the couple of unusually inclement days we experienced, even the TV in the room kept us up to date with UK progs.
Surely it must be proof of the hotel's charm that I met there numerous repeat clients???? Some of whom returned 3x a year and had done so for the last 5/6 years! Saying that I too am considering a return visit! This after 30 years of travel will be a first to go back to the same resort let alone the same hotel.
