We stayed here in September 2007, and have just returned from a week's stay, this time with my 17 year old daughter. Again we thoroughly enjoyed the holiday, but the hotel had a very different atmosphere this time due to school holidays. In September the majority of guests were in the 30-60 age group with a few babies, this time there were lots of children and babies which made the atmosphere very different. A few further details and hints:
CHECK IN: Check in can have a long queue - the staff are efficient but be prepared for a wait! Rooms are not guarenteed until 2.30, and most rooms are not available until then. If you are on an early flight (as most UK flights seem to be), expect to have to chill out with your first all inclusive drinks in the bar area and then have your first lunch - a delightful experience but not if you expected to get your room at once! Top tip - when you collect your key to get into your room, buy a towel ticket (deposit of 10€ per towel, take the ticket to the spa to exchange for the towel!) - this avoids a queue later, and also get a safe key - non refundable payment of 2.5€ per day- again it saves queuing later.
ROOMS: We had booked a junior suite for the 3 of us, and asked at check in if we could have one near the main hotel (room 9003 this time). Very large room - our bed was 7', and the sofabed was more then adequate for daughter (5'3") and was apparently comfortable. Room large, bathroom adequate, fresh toiletries every day. Complimentery mini bar with water, beer and soft drinks. Terrace was vast - only quibble was that the hotel would not bring a 3rd lounger to the terrace!! Maid very efficient and friendly.
FOOD AND DRINK: I noted in the last review they said the food was depressing. I know what they mean, but we found more than enough on the buffet every time to have a decent lunch or dinner. Breakfast is excellant - hot selection of sausages, eggs, baked beans, tomatoes, bacon etc, full cold selection plus pancakes, churros etc. Coffee brought to table by waitress, you make tea from a machine. Lunch and dinner in the main restaurant are all buffet - there is always a lovely salad bar, pasta, 2 different soups and a section where meat is carved and steaks cooked. There are several main course choices with potatoes and a few veg. Good cheese selection, fresh fruit, mousse-y type puddings and ice cream. I really cannot see why anyone would feel they had to go outside the hotel to eat. Drinks are served to your table at lunch and dinner.
We did go to the Italian one evening but it wasn't really worth it - though husband's chicken was very good.
You help yourself to most drinks in the lobby bar area, though the bar staff will also make them for you. Wine is OK, local spirits rough-ish as you would expect but quite drinkable.
LOCATION: Awful! Once you're in the compound stay there! Playa is 15€ taxi away, though I wouldn't really want to go there often. The rocky bay to the left of the hotel (as you face the sea) is lovely - walk across the scrubland. It's very rocky and dramatic - you can get to the sea in a couple of places but mainly good for the scenery. Nowhere to walk to in the evening which is really the only downside. There are a few shops in the commercial area which sell most of what you want/need.
GUESTS: As mentioned above, the hotel is very different in school holidays. Due to the size it did not seem crowded, but the dining room and indoor bar was noisy in the evenings. If you're travelling with children you probably wouldn't notice, but otherwise I would recommend you go in term time.
OVERALL? Great hotel, spotlessly clean, efficient staff, just right for a chilling out holiday. Think I would get cabin fever if I stayed for over a week, but very relaxing.
I know this is a long review, but if you want more details contact me!
