My wife and I have just returned from a ten-night stay at the Riu Palace Tenerife (Aug 2007). Booking was through Thomson in the UK. We stayed two years ago at the Riu Palace Maspalomas in Grand Canaria and really enjoyed the hotel, but we were looking for somewhere that had better options for walking in the evening (which was a bit lacking at Maspalomas). My parents have stayed at both hotels and recommended Tenerife due to its beach promenade, which runs along the coast of Costa De Adeje (Playa Des Americas).
The hotel layout is upside down. The reception is on floor six and the pool and grounds are accessed via floor one. This provides a very nice patio area on floor six, with views overlooking the grounds and coast where you can have breakfast or sit in the evening and have a drink.
The standard of the hotel was very good. Food: you have the option of eating in either the main or poolside restaurant in the evening. Breakfast is in the main restaurant. Breakfast is the usual options of cold meat, cheeses and then the usual hot foods. Omelettes are made to order and the standard of food and presentation is very good overall. A nice touch at the Riu Palace is the complementary sparkling wine that is available at breakfast. In the evening, you have two options in the main restaurant, the buffet or set menu that is waiter served. The poolside restaurant has three rotating set menus dependant upon day. We had no issues with the food at all. The buffet selection was very good and pretty much catered for those who like chips with everything to more traditional local dishes.
The pool area is very nice with two reasonable size pools and a children’s splash one. There is one largish bar and the poolside restaurant. There is also a small bar near to the promenade walk with clear views out to sea (our favourite). The main area around the pools and restaurants are paved but there is also a sandy area with sun loungers that is adjacent to the poolside restaurant. One thing to point out is that hotel policy is that sun loungers are not supposed to be reserved before 08:00, but the more popular areas around the pool get reserved very promptly after 0800 hrs. Coming down after breakfast (0800 until 1030 hrs) meant you had a limited selection when we stayed in August. Arriving at 1400 hrs on the first day, we were amazed that not one bed was available on the paved area around the pools. It was not a problem for us as early risers, but worth noting if you like to lie in.
This is one of the few complaints we had, the evening entertainment. It consisted of the same band playing virtually the same songs every night, except on two evenings (Friday and Sunday) when we had shows lasting an hour. If you like to be entertained in the evening, then you may be a bit disappointed.
The location we thought was excellent. The hotel grounds end at the promenade walk that effectively starts at the Sheraton and H10 Hotels that are next door to the Riu and runs along the beach line for miles to Los Cristianos. We would say the Riu had the best-unobstructed views of the sea (so long as you get the popular sun beds) than any of the other hotels, we looked at (H10, Sheraton, Bahia and Anthelia). Around the corner is also a small shop if you want a morning stroll for the newspaper or water (out the front entrance and second road on you right; about 3 min walk). Walking up to the Anthelia Hotel was very pleasant (15-20 minutes). There is also a new shopping centre adjacent to the Anthelia with designer shops and jewellers. Further past the Anthelia (heading towards Los Cristianos), it becomes very apparent that you are leaving the surroundings of the predominantly four and five star hotels.
On the room front, the standard was the same as the other Palace hotel, very comfortable and tastefully decorated. We had a ground floor terrace room. The hotel is roughly horseshoe in shape and so the rooms at the side do not have particularly great views. We were in room 362 and it worked well for us though. That side of the hotel faces onto the Sheraton (looking from the sea at the hotel it will be on your left), but our terrace had a good covering of palm trees in front so we could sit on the terrace in privacy. We also got half the terrace in the shade at about 1700 hrs onwards. Other rooms did not seem to fare to well though regarding privacy. The opposite side of the hotel has a reasonably busy path next to it (leads to/from the beach/Riu Arecas which is just behind the Palace) so walking along it you can look down onto or into most of the rooms. Also worth mentioning that the front facing sea view rooms would get very little reprieve from the Sun, ones further around the easterly side got a bit of shade if that is what you prefer. I would say room selection is a little more critical at this hotel than others I have been to if you are a bit fussy about your view and privacy.
Overall, would we recommend the Riu Palace Tenerife? The answer has to be YES. Baring the entertainment and having to sort the sun beds early the stay was excellent. Good food, nice room, nice surroundings that are well kept and a very good location.
