We have just arrived back from a 10 day holiday at the Riu Palace, in Costa Adeje, Tenerife. It was our first time to Tenerife. We booked via Thomson, who miss sold us a sea view room. So three weeks to go to our holiday we receive our ticket books and no sea view. After much denial by Thomson offers of hotel next door with only bed and breakfast at the same price and another in the noisy part of Costa Adeje. Our answer was on your bike Thomson. Then the girl who sold us the holiday calls and apologies, stating that her computer was not updated by another computer. She offers us £200 pounds and I state that her collegue had called the previous week to offer £200 pounds and after I had stated what about all the telephone calls and time wasted on your poor customer service he had offered a further £50 pounds compensation. Thomson complaint system is a mess. Eventually the HQ of TUI / THomson at Luton told us that they had managed to get us a sea view room which turned out to be a side sea view if you stretched your neck enough over the balcany.
Anyway back to the hotel. Its a very good hotel with some three star problems. The restaurant is buffet for the excellent salad selection and prawns and cold fish, plus the normal ham. Then there are the cooking stations for whatever is the flavour of the roast night - beef, lamb or pork, a station for fish being cooked in front of you with hot plates containing cooked fish that you can take to make it quicker. Then a pasta station with all types and also pizza. Another station that is cooking steak entrecote and lamb chops some nights with real gravy even the fish station has a fish sauce. The hotel cooks more vegetables than many other hotels. The only down side is the potatoes which are like small new potatoes cooked in salt. They are completely salty right the way through the potatoe. Every night. They did have some chips but the container did not get refilled often enough. There is a cheese station which is very good. One night they had what was called English potatoes but they were saute potatoes in large cubes. I did tell them they need to boil some potatoes without salt or get some large potatoes for baking to vary the potatoe situation as most Brits, Dutch and Germans were not eating the salty potatoes and going without. There is another restaurant by the pool which is a grill type place with lamb chops and beef and pork. You can also dine out on the 6th floor terrace which over looks the bay. At night the view is fantastic. You can have coffee and drinks further round on the terrace.
The desert station was good but the ice cream tubs were not always out.
The breakfast is buffet with the usual continental items. An smoothy station with about 8 different types. An omelete station with different ingredients. Fried egg station with different bits like bacon and tomatoe.
Some people have said that its not child friendly. The staff are friendly to every body and the children have a small pool and play area. The only problem is the two main swimming pools are deep for non or learner swimmers. The grounds are stunning.
The rooms are large with a small bathroom that is has a small bath come shower but difficult for older people to get in and out if they have problems.
I was told by a director of the hotel that they intend to refurbish the rooms in 18 months time as I complained about the state of the carpet. He stated they were at the end of life but I disagreed with him and stated they were probably coffee, tea and suncream stains could be cleaned but I agreed with him that some were bubble gum stains. He stated he would look into it.
The bed linen was very clean but some of the towels were end of life both in the bathroom and the pool towels. Room maid was first class and everything cleaned.
My biggest gripe was the sunbeds these are 3 star with a 2 star mattress. Hard to adjust and very hard to lay on. Pool service was first class.
Evening entertainment was very poor (when you see groups with singing of the music sheets its bad but also sounds bad) apart from a El Diva tribute singers from South Africa who are great. I would not like to be near room 540 because they are right under the noise from this group and even refused to turn their noise down.
The hotel is about 90% German who on the whole had good manners and providing you could get to the pool by 9.30am you got two sunbeds together. Most staff speak English and it was a good chance to talk German. No problem with topless sunbathing. I saw a German man tell off some German kids for making too much noise in the pool but the hotel lacked pool staff to help people move sunbeds.
Weather was eight days of 25 to 28degC and two days 30 to 35deC. Loro Parque is well worth the day out for adults and children.
I would go again to the Riu Palace but not with Thomson/TUI
