Roca Nivaria - Another great Hotel we picked for holidays this year.
So i am going to write this review in as easy a format as i can to make it easier for you guys to decide whether its for you or not!....
The Hotel: Initial impressions when we first arrived - very quite - very clean and looked great. The reason it was quiet was because everyone was at the pools out the back or away on trips as we had arrived in the middle of the day. The hotel overall has a very clean and new feel to it - the decor is both modern & tasteful but not quite boutique which is maybe a good thing. The bars are comfortable and the restaurants are bright and very clean (i will deal with these later anyway) We were shown to our room which was a double room with a sea/pool view on arrival and we were very happy with the room as it looked good and more importantly was quite spacious and was very clean with a lovely spacious bathroom - the shower and the toilet within the bathroom both had their own cubicles with a swinging frosted door so effectively one could have a shower while the other cleaned their teeth! The balcony is quite small (and i think most of them are the same) but we rarely spent too much time out there anyway! Overall though top marks on the overall appearance and cleanliness of the Hotel.
The Food: The Food was overall fantastic i have to say. We had done half board this year & i was delighted we did as we ended up eating in the hotel every night (this was because of the location which i will deal with later) There are three restaurants in the Hotel - the main Buffet restaurant - a spanish style restaurant - and an Italian restaurant. Unfortunately i can not comment on the Spanish one as we never tried it (Because we enjoyed the Buffet so much) but the Italian restaurant was lovely and quaint - good food and did what it said on the tin! Back to the Buffet...We really enjoyed this every night. We have a 9 year old daughter, my partner is a vegetarian for the most part and i will pretty much eat anything! There was everything in here from fruits, cheeses, salads, seafood, roasts, sauces, vegetables and fantastic mix of desserts with ice creams, puddings, tarts, cheesecakes and all sorts to suit all tastes. There was a section in the buffet where you could also get your meats or fish cooked while you waited with plate in hand (such as pork steaks, veal, prawns, fish etc) & i must admit this was great but if i was to give one bit of a critique it would be that they could do with a second chef and cooking area here because when it got busy there would be a line of people (maybe max about ten long) waiting with plate in hand for the food to be cooked - i felt at times like i was Oliver asking for 'MORE' so i didn't really like having to line up with my plate in hand but in fairness we were never waiting more than say 5 -10 minutes maximum & this was only if you wanted freshly fried/cooked meat or fish as opposed to the other carvery style fish/veg and meats. The only other thing that maybe took the food off 'excellent' level was the fact that i felt that quite a lot of the time the vegetables in the carvery style bays - where you just picked your food out and dropped it on your plate - was for my taste a little overcooked, the brocolli was soft and often the same with the carrots and most of the green vegetables. Perhaps it was just me and maybe most people prefer it that way and this was perhaps a byproduct of it needing to be cooked in mass volume but this is one area that could certainly be improved in my mind as i think the benefical value of the vegetables was simply cooked out of most of the vegetables in these areas. Perhaps it doesn't matter to most people about the vegetables but to me when you are on holidays and you are probably eating and drinking lots of food and junk you wouldn't normally i felt this was one area i could be retaining some aspect of healthiness so was a little let down in this regard! Having said that there were also some stir fried fresh vegetables available most nights as well. I should also mention that the carvery areas with self help foods were constantly being checked and refilled and even dumped if they were there too long so points for that. Overall the food was just excellent and there was even a little small kids carvery which i thought was very thoughtful and a great idea so they could help themselves (though the usual suspects of nuggets and mini pizzas and chips were all too present - as well as mixed veg and desserts) but i guess we could let this go as it was holidays afterall! Did i mention the desserts...all i will say is that i blame this aspect most for me putting on a few pounds on my holidays this year...they were just lovely! Note also that there was a different 'theme' each night for the food so one night it might be spanish and another Italian etc etc so this made for a nice change each evening in terms of the types of meats etc available.
The Location: This was perhaps the one thing that for me was a little bit disappointing in the holiday. When we go away on holidays we always like to go for a stroll and have a potter around the local shops and maybe go for a coffee in a nice cafe or bar but to be honest the shops/bars and etc that are quite close to the hotel are quite frankly cheap and matter of fact - there are very few of them and there is certainly nothing 'romantic' about any aspect of these shops and bars. The Hotel is literally 'ON' the seafront and in fairness there is a nice purpose built walkway where you can walk for maybe a half a mile or so along the seafront and watch the fishermen but this is also very 'Hilly' so is certainly not a comfortable walk for anyone with young children or the elderly. Also there is nothing much to see on this walk bar other apartments and hotels so again i felt that it was very purpose built and not at all romantic in terms of the area generally. Overall the area itself bar the Hotel was a big letdown for us as this is one aspect of our holidays we always enjoy - that being our little walks - in the evening after our meal where we might buy presents for our family or each other. If you wanted to get a taxi into the main town/shopping area in the evening this cost approx 20 euro each way so was not cheap (Playa las Americas) * The Hotel did provide a shuttle service into town during the day but this ended at 7.30 in the evening which i felt was a little early - it would have been great to have one last one at maybe around 8 or 8.30 which would enable us to get into town without having to get a taxi both ways at an overall cost of approx €40 euros!
The Services/Entertainment: Firstly i must say that the gym in this hotel was probably the best i have ever used in 'ANY' hotel with excellent equipment and plenty of space (this was/ is important for our family as both myself and my partner like to try and work off some of the excess foods for an hour every day on holidays and we are both 'keep fit' people anyway) The unique thing about this gym was that the cardio area was separate from the weights area which really appealed to my parter as she likes to work out without the roaring or glaring eyes of the gents in the gym lifting weights (not that they would be looking at women of course!) The SPA and relaxation area which is located in the same area as the GYM was lovely as well - though i didn't use it my partner did and she was impressed.
The Entertainment in the hotel was overall great espescially the ones that were orientated for the kids such as the 'loro park' parrots show etc. We really enjoyed these and there was a good mix of shows. I must also say that the 'animation staff' who helped with activities for both kids and adults during the day and evening were absolutely fantastic and very helpful and friendly so 100% top marks for these guys espescially the polish guy 'Tom' who really helped me pass some of my days with mini golf and archery and volleyball etc...(i'm not a great one for lying by the pool!) The Music that was on most nights outside the bar areas was fine if perhaps a little cheesy with Tina turner impersonations or Elvis impersonations - this was perhaps more for the older generation and was certainly not our cup of tea - but was fine if you are into that kind of thing ;)
Pools: Great pools for both kids and adults. There was one large freshwater pool and a large seawater pool with kids pools as well...these were all very clean and well maintained and plenty of space and nearly always a sunchair as long as you didnt arrive at 12 oclock in the afternoon!. One thing though...the water aerobics that used to take place in the seawater pool most mornings stung our eyes because of the salty water when we splashed around so maybe the management should consider doing this in the freshwater pool? Also the pools are very easygoing and as far as i could see only one lifeguard for the two pools who seemed to be based mainly at the seawater pool so worth noting for parents with younger children - we always watch ours like a hawk anyway & of course most parents do anyway but as i said worthy noting that perhaps you need to be extra careful as they are not as strict as other hotels i have stayed in regarding the pools which is not a bad thing as some places we have stayed had literally 'pool police' so this made for a more relaxed pool atmosphere.
Overall a very impressive hotel with Lovely staff (even the cleaning ladies and staff are really friendly which is most unusual to me :) great food and very clean and well maintained so top marks overall bar the location which didn't do it for us....
Thats really all i can think of.. i hope this helps you in deciding whether the Hotel is right for you and yours...
