The hotel is in a great location, right on the front overlooking the river/ marshland. It makes the most of this with great views from the dining room, bar and a quiet lounge area on the first floor. The hotel has been almost completely refurbished, with the reception and lounges done as well as most of the rooms. When we were there they hadn't quite finished (meant to be done by end April), but the contrast with some of the corridors that hadn't been redecorated yet showed what a good job they had done.
We had a family room, which had enough space for 3 kids and was comfortable, well set out and recently refurbished. The hotel also has a few lounge areas with plenty of seating and feels quite spacious because of this. It also has a games room and pool if you want other things to do in the hotel, although most people come here to be out enjoying the countryside.
There was quite a range of guests, with many older couples and groups but also some families (we were there at the end of the easter holidays). It did give it a very quiet atmosphere, which is in keeping with the tranquil setting, but can be less relaxing when trying to keep our young kids from disturbing the peace!
Food was mostly very good, service was very friendly - with nice touches like not having to sign for dinner as they know you are staying at the hotel and are treated more like a guest than a customer.
In summary, its a modernised but traditional hotel in a beautiful rural part of the country. We would go back.
