My husband and I stayed at the The Old Rectory for two nights as we were attending his Brother’s wedding. We had looked at several B&B's in the area but we settled on this one as it looked very comfortable, was a little way from the centre of town so no traffic noise and was smaller than the large commercial hotels/B&B's which can be noisy & busy. The owners were most welcoming on our arrival and we were taken to a basement ensuite room. Though the room was tastefully furnished, clean and comfortable it was unbearably hot. We turned the radiator off in the room and the bathroom but it was stifling as the window would not open having been painted shut, causing terrible condensation on the window. Unfortunately due to the heat, a good night’s sleep was out of the question as we are used to having fresh air in the room. Also, everyone coming into the basement which was every guest as this was the designated guest entrance looked directly into our room. Hence we had to have the blind down day and night. The ensuite was also very small and the spot lights in the low ceiling directly above your head in the shower were most uncomfortable as they were red hot.
There was some confusion when my sister in law arrived with her husband and 2 year old on the Saturday as the room intended for them hadn't been cleaned from the previous occupants and there was no cot for the child. They were redirected to the top of the house and given a light and airy double ensuite room. Having seen their room, we were very disappointed with the room allocated to us being that we had made our reservation in August 2010, 6 months in advance.
The owners were very helpful having arranged breakfast in the main dining room so we, my sister-in-law and family and another couple who were also friends could have breakfast together. A cooked breakfast was offered along with tea, coffee, orange juice, toast, grapefruit segments and a selection of cereals, which was all very pleasant. If you are looking for a short stay and prefer the more personal touch then I would highly recommend this B&B. The style and furnishing are definitely more boutique hotel than the thread bare B&B's I have stayed in before. It is a short 10 minute walk into the centre of Kings Lynn or a very reasonable £3.50 taxi ride.
