We have just stayed for a night (and evening meal) at the Seafood restaurant and I think some of the other reviews on this site must be referring to a different place as the experience we had was superb.

The room (St Breocks) was excellent and the bathroom was absolutely immaculate. To be honest when you can pay the same sort of price for a night in a Hilton (£165) the room rate is something of a bargain.

For dinner we opted for the tasting menu at £65 a head. Had we not done this I think we both would have regretted being confined to just two dishes from the extensive menu. The food was absolutely stunning and by the fifth course we were getting pretty full.

The staff were extremely attentive and courteous throughout and the whole evening was very relaxed. Obviously it isn't cheap but I'd much rather pay that bit extra for the sort of quality food and service on offer. Go and experience it - you won't regret it.....

As well as being Rick Stein's renowned flagship restaurant, the Seafood Restaurant offers a choice a luxury rooms perfect for a special break away.

My room was, I think, one of the smaller ones. But it was beautifully furnished, comfortable, welcoming, and equipped with everything you would need.

The bathroom was immaculate, with pristine white tiles, quality wood flooring, nice toiletries and a decent over-bath shower.
Utterly peaceful, in part due to the side-facing bedroom window.
The room had a controllable aircon unit which I am sure would be a godsend during the wamer months.

My only niggle would be that the wooden blinds look great but let in quite a bit of light which might be a problem for light sleepers.
Breakfast was superb. Nice juices, plenty of fresh fruit, and tempting pastries. Not wanting the "full English", the waitress helpfully suggested a bacon sandwich - which was delicious. Probably the best bacon I've ever tasted - dry cured, thick, and with a proper rind. Yum!

Staff throughout were friendly, helpful and accommodating.

“Stick to the Cafe or Chip shop!”

We stayed in the Rick Stein Cafe - the Thrift room which was lovely and good value for money. Small, but cosy with Molton Brown toiletries and an LCD screen all you could want for a short stay. The breakfast was included and very nice with good healthy choices on the menu.
In fact we wished we had ate there instead of the Seafood Restaurant! All I can say it was overpriced and I don't mind paying those prices if its worth it... but it didn't give me the WOW factor... It was OK...not really much view of the sea or harbour and I had the lobster thermidor which was nice but I get the feeling you could have had that up the road for £10 less and got HOT vegatables with it! The service was poor and full of students that didn't know anything about the brandy or wine and weren't very enthusiastic about the menu!
The Fish and Chips on the other hand were divine! It seems that on the good old fashioned things the Stein experience is worth it but for the price you pay for the restaurant I would definitely recommend that you go else where. If you do go then go for the tasting menu at least you get to try more ... but at £65 per person its up to you if you want to chance it!

Didn't stay here , but had lunch with friends. Very expensive for what it was. Average £30 for a main course, food ok, but expected alot more for the price. Decor very plain nothing special and tables squashed in together, no chance of privacy!!!
Staff mainly foreign students, more interested in getting a tip. Plenty of other places to eat at a better priice. Won't bother again!

“Rick Stein no longer the benchmark in Padstow”

We were looking forward to eating at the Seafood and I was unprepared for the massive influence Mr. Stein has on Padstow, it might be good, I cannot comment on that, but I did hear locals tell tourists the the Chip Ahoy was better than Stein's Fish and chips.
The food at the Seafood was not bad, the quality of the seafood is excellent, that at least. The service is not attentive. All in all, what I missed was enthousiasm, passion, hospitability. People who work here (as in St. Petroc's brasserie) do not seem to like their job very much.
Now, if you are planning to go to Padstow and it is a charming place and good start for many breathtaking walks, go to Number 6. As far as I am concerned the new benchmark for Padstow. Mr. Stein has a well oiled marketing machine, but he may have forgotten what it's like to have his feet on the kitchen floor.
