Had dinner with my family while on holiday in Cornwall last week. Food was excellent, service first class, wonderful atmosphere, and great value for money. I had the steak, which was cooked precisely as requested (medium), and the chips were worth the trip on their own! all seven of us raved about our own dishes! Small but well balanced menu, and a good wine list with plenty of choice without breaking the bank.

“Delicious food and excellent customer care/service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

A small but refined menu that was delicious. I had the ox tongue and cheek lyonnaise which was cooked beautifully and melted in your mouth. My husband enjoyed the duck main course. We also tucked into the cheese tasters which was ample and meant that you didn't opt for the larger portion of cheeses.

The restaurant was small and was therefore quite quiet until other diners arrived.

The wine menu was quite substantial with some variation on the prices.

The waiting staff were attentive and helpful but without being intrusive.

“Never puts a foot wrong!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2010

My wife and I are long term fans of Number 6. Each visit delivers on every level - from your welcome through the door to the quality of the food on the plate through to waddling out the door after eating that pudding that you didn't really have room for!

Our recent trip for Mother's Day was no exception. How Paul packs the flavour he does into his food is beyond me. How he presents that food with real presentational style (but without lapsing into unnecessary faff on the plate) is a revelation. His hand dived scallops were plump, deliciously caramelised on the outside - juicy and sweet on the inside. Roast chicken doesn't sound like the most inspiring chef's dish but then you've not really seen what can be done with a chicken until you've tried it at Paul's.

Couldn't manage pudding this time (it was lunch time and we were uncharacteristically restrained!) but the wine list offered great value with something for all tastes and price ranges.

Will we keep going back? You betcha! After all it was here that my wife was so enthralled by the menu that she didn't hear me propose to her!

Thanks to Paul and his team. A pleasure and a treat as ever!

“Fab food let down by haphazard service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2010

The title says it all. The food is beautifully cooked and presented. The menu is interesting and short enough to convince that it is all fresh. The wine list offers reasonable value, with some excellent drinkable wines at the cheaper end.
The ambience is relaxed, and Paul took the time to meet all the diners (at least all those still there) at the end of the evening.
The service was, however, haphazard. The table next to us seemed to be served by one individual, who was excellent. He was also on hand to help when we had queries. He was, however, one of several who worked our table, thereby giving no feeling of personal service. Our initial waitress didn't explain the specials, nor did she deal with our wine correctly (red wine-newly opened-poured afull glass to taste- didn't wait for a response- didn't pour any more wine at any time either for me or for my wife!!).
Would we return? Absolutely. The food works. Paul Ainsworth is a fab chef, but if he wants a Michelin Star (which I believe he does), he needs to look at both staffing levels and quality of staff.

“Fed up”

We were in Padstow on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. We saw that Paul Ainswoth did afternoon Tea and coffee untill 4pm. In we went. All very quiet. Sat down waiting to be served. A girl came in after 5 mins. We asked for two coffees and some cake. She then said they had no cake left, but she would check. Another 5 mins went by. Yes we have a pastry left. Off she went and came back with the coffee a knife and a serviette. We sat there for another 5 mins and drank our coffee, still no pastry! We were bored by then, we left the money for the coffee on the table and left.
Cant comment on the food. Would I go for a meal there? No, probably not!
