Plantation House Hotel and Restaurant

This is Devon's best kept secret. We had a most perfect weekend at
> Plantation House together with a small party of friends to celebrate
> my husband's 60th birthday. The attention to detail was second to
> none. There had been much thought given to providing us with superb
> cuisine in the most delightful surroundings. It would be difficult to

“Countryside Haven”

Plantation House Hotel and Restaurant

I stayed for a Saturday night in March and had a lovely time. I booked the room late as I was attending a wedding nearby and requested an early check in and the staff confirmed I was welcome to arrive anytime from midday. I had a single room which was small however it had everything which was promised on the website; lovely bowl of fresh fruit (including grapes and plums), fresh flowers, bottle of local spring water and fresh coffee/cafetierre and I was offered fresh milk when I arrived. Shortly after I checked in I received a phone call from the owner making sure I had everything I required and I was happy with the room, this was a great touch and made me feel like a valued guest. The bed was comfy (and was of a reasonable height - one of my pet hates are beds that are virtually on the floor!) and the quality of the linen/towels/toiletries was excellent. In addition I could not fault the cleanliness of the room. The staff gave me directions to the wedding venue which was the Langdon Court Hotel. I could have stayed there as they had a late cancellation but having seen one of their rooms I was immensely glad I stuck with the Plantation as it was half the cost (£55) and had a much friendlier atmosphere and all the same facilities. The location was great, I thought it was very quiet ,and the house is set back from the road which is certainly not a 'main road' and there is plenty of secure parking which none of rooms overlook. My room was at the back of the house so I didn't have views of the river but there was definitely no road noise, in fact just the local partridge! Breakfast was lovely and cooked to order, everything from the Full English to scrambled eggs and smoked salmon is available and there is the usual fresh juice, cereals, yoghurt and a lovely fresh fruit selection which had all been prepared for you. In addition it is served in a delightful room at the front of the house so everyone can enjoy the views. A cold breakfast is available in your room and this is certainly something I would consider merely for the fruit selection! The hotel restaurant is open to non residents in the evening which I was somewhat concerned about, however this proved unfounded as it is small and far removed from the guest rooms. Speaking with wedding guests I understand the restaurant has a wonderful reputation and having viewed the menu and sampled the breakfast I can understand why, my only regret is that I did not have the opportunity to sample this, something I intend to correct in the future! Considering this is such a short distance from Plymouth, Plantation House is a countryside Haven with everything you will need for a relaxed break.

We stayed here for a night whist house-hunting in Devon. When we booked, we were told that the owners were on holiday and that we likely to be the only residents, but that they would take us for the one night. However, the staff were really helpful, and booked us into a local restaurant and arranged taxi's etc. as the kitchen wasn't open.
We arrived in pouring rain and darkness, so didn't really get to see much of the garden until the morning, which was a shame as the patio area is really nice, (but not too welcoming in a wet January!)
Our room (Singapore Sling) was really comfortable, plenty large enough with fruit, water and coffee etc. Nice big bed with good pillows and duvet, TV, radio and a table and chairs.
The bathroom was well appointed, and the whole place was very welcoming.
There was only person there looking looking after us, and he did extremely well! Glass of wine when we arrived, fantastic breakfast cooked to order and he made us feel at home with nothing too much trouble. The log fire was kept stoked up for us, which was just right when we came back from the restaurant.
We'd definitely stay again, and I'd very much like to sample the food as the menu looked good.

Small, relaxed hotel. Good sized comfortable rooms with scenic views. Good breakfast, have dinner if you stay there, excellent food. One of the best puddings I have ever tasted.
Very warm welcome and the owners couldn't do enough for us. Our stay felt like a real treat.

We stayed at this hotel for one night over the August Bank Holiday. I booked it based on the reviews on TripAdvisor and am pleased to say that the place is indeed lovely.

We stayed in a room called "Singapore Sling" which was spacious with a large sash window overlooking the fields across the road, with modern but sympathetic furnishings including a large coffee table and armchairs.

The owners have really thought about how to make you feel at home, and in the room they provide a selection of tea and coffee (including cafetiere), plus fruit bowl and bottle of water so you can settle in. They also have some lovely bath products which I haven't come across before.

Breakfast was first class, and we were told by some friends who live nearby that the set dinner is fantastic - but they don't serve this on a Sunday evening which is when we stayed. (Try the Rose and Crown in nearby Yealmpton for a great upmarket menu).

Our only criticism is that even with the window wide open and the curtains half open too, the room was really hot and airless overnight so we didn't get much sleep. Although it might be a bit much to expect an older building to be fully airconditioned, to most people getting a good kip is important so I hope they find a solution. If they did, it would also mean that the sound of the busy road below the hotel would not be so noticeable.

Overall, a much above average experience, and we would consider going back.
