This is a simply charming, small, yet unique place to stay. It does have a rural location, so if it is the bright lights of Chard you seek, you may be disappointed, but I wasn't.

My room featured an outstanding view over the local countryside and the quiet location (the pub over the road and the church.... that's about it) suited me down to the ground. I travel a lot on business and found the tranquility of the location most favourable.

My room was far from basic with a number of pleasant amienities. A nice touch was the poetry volume (all rooms are named after romantic poets) and since I need to brush up on my romantic period prose - it was an individual touch.

I did wrestle with the infernal vagaries of the shower, but since I managed two hot showers from three attempts, I put it down to human error on my part. The owners are incredibly nice people, very accomodating (nothing being too much trouble, even the suggestion of WIFI access) and have been at the helm for around six months. Obviously they are still in the process of personalising the property, generally speaking the hotel was in a fine state of repair and upkeep, spotlessly clean.

The dining room had a cosy, yet intmate feel (always a bonus for a lone traveller) and the food... well, I should really start a new paragraph.

I ate evening meal twice here and have to say that the food is carefully prepared and thoughtfully executed with a considerable degree of skill and flourish. That said, the food is not unneccesarily fussy or poncey, but good ingredients combine with artful technique. This does not just extend to evening meal. Breakfast on both occasions (full English and smoked haddock) were perfectly cooked using only the finest ingredients, effectively rendering me 'pogged' for most of the day.

On top of all this, my stay represented excellent value for money, considering the home comforts, food and convivial demeanour of my hosts. I do hope I have opportunity to visit again, and wish Neil & Sarah Jane all the best in the future.

I needed a "same day" booking, and found the hotel on Google. A quick phone call revealed "a cancellation", but no discount.

Anyway, the pricing looked OK, and spending the next half an hour phoning around to save a few quid didn't appeal, so I booked on spec.

So glad I did. Having come down from London for a Devon-based meeting the following morning, I arrived to find Neil and Sarah-Jane washing up from dinner (which I'd of course missed.)

Got chatting to them, and discovered that they'd owned the place for 6 weeks... but that I had a choice of three rooms (so clearly not too full.)

I picked one, and was about to go to bed when I flicked through the "guest information" booklet.... and discovered a piece about their range of sherries, so I toddled back down to the bar (about 10pm) to ask what they had.

Both of them burst out laughing - it turns out that they'd inherited a sherry cellar from the previous owners, and didn't really know what was there... so Sarah-Jane set up a line of glasses on the bar, and she and I worked through a few until we found the line I liked the most, and poured out a full glass. (They only charged for that glass, by the way, not for the others we'd tested.)

Breakfast was great - a full English full of locally sourced, primarily organic product, and S-J got out the bottle of sherry I'd found and wrote down the name for me on the bill...

... I checked out with a good feeling, and the following night, back in London, discovered I'd left my Barbour there... Turning on the mobile (which I'd turned off in the aforementioned meetings), I found a string of missed calls from them, who had trying to get in touch to let me know in time for me to pick it up on the return journey. As things have turned out, I've got the choice of them couriering it back to me, or picking up in a couple of weeks when I hope to be back in the area.

Only downside (for me) is that they don't take children. Actually, for that trip, that was an upside, but obviously rules them out for a future family trip.

Worth noting that the restaurant CHOICE must be booked in advance, and they only have one sitting. From the grins on the faces of the diners I saw through the door when I arrived, I'm disappointed I wasn't there for the 7:30 serving, and had booked too late to arrange it.

Booked for one night ended up staying for three. The service was great and Neil and Sarah Jayne were great hosts. Neil and Sarah Jayne have just started this new adventure and I wish them all the luck in the world, see you both soon. Hopefully walking better. It was so lovely that it was hard to drag ourselves away from the hotel. If you want just a small out of the way place to stay but easy access to surrounding areas this is the place for you. “Remote country place”

The Belfry Country Hotel

26 Jun 2007

We just stayed one night at the Belfry Country Hotel : it was just a stop on our way to Cornwall. The hotel was fine, the room clean and cosy, we had one with the stained-glass window and it gave a special touch to the room. Once we were there, we regretted we had not chosen to eat at the hotel because the village is very small and except for the pub next door, if you need a restaurant you have to drive to Chard (6 miles away). Besides the food seems to be really good at the hotel's restaurant (the breakfast was cooked to perfection).
This must be a good place to stay if you want to visit the area and stay away from civilization.
If you are a light sleeper, be sure not to have a room overlooking the road because the night traffic is rather noisy there.

“Fabulous dining”

This place is a real find. The rooms are attractive and the hosts most friendly. Above all however Paul the owner/chef prides himself in excellent cuisine. He provided some of the best food we have had anywhere in the world, and excellent wines as well. We have been around a bit and would not hesitate to recommend this to our closest friends.
