Heilala is utterly unpretentious, very homely, really well maintained and enjoys a beautiful natural tropical garden setting. We stayed in one of their cool, shaded Fales - built of wood and palm fronds so no metal roof to turn it into an oven! There are other options for accommodation too but we chose the one with the insect screens and the fridge. It had everything we wanted - en-suite; little verandah out the front; hammock; chairs and table; kettle; drinking water; tea/coffee - and was serviced every other day. Basic - but lacking nothing.
The beach is right in front of the garden with good, easy snorkelling at lower tides - perfect for beginners. Plenty of different fish and you can stay within your depth.
The garden is home to several free-ranging chickens - fun to watch! - and lots of baby chicks; a couple of sleepy, clean, friendly dogs and other native birds. The foliage is lush and colourful and coconuts and dead leaves are picked up every day.
Breakfast is a mixture of tropical fruits; toast; tea/coffee and jam - extras like cooked are available too, as are lunch and dinner on request. They also have a well-stocked bar. Sven and Kavolina are just the NICEST people. Nothing is too much trouble, and they really go the extra mile to make sure that you have everything you need.
Having a car was a bonus - and they are cheap to hire - as it is about 25 minutes from town - but there are two other resorts within walking distance so if you feel the need for a change of place for dinner you can get by without one.
We checked out every other beach front resort on the island and really felt we'd picked the best ... not the biggest, but definitely the cleanest; the most tranquil, prettiest - and most relaxed with the nicest accommodation inside and out.
If we ever go back I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else :)
