Stayed in Loldia House for 2 nights as part of our second Honeymoon in Feb '12 before flying onto Little Governors in the Mara . Everything booked through Trailfinders in Dublin.
We have both travelled extensively over the years but this sticks out in my mind as one of the most special places we have ever stayed at. From landing on the dirt airstrip via the safari link flight from Nairobi and being welcomed by the very friendly Sammy (jambo!), our guide for the next few days, to arriving at a very colonial feeling house (Loldia Lodge), its lawn rolling down to the lake shore, welcomed by a very warm South African host and manager; Colin, to cocktails on arrival and a wedding on a the lawn in the late afternoon sun we could not have imagined a more perfect start to our stay. It only got better when we were brought up to own amazing cottage on the hill with stunning views over Lake Naivasha. Well the cottage was for 3 couples (three bedrooms) but as we were the only ones there so had the whole place to ourselves (bar Peter our superb Butler). Rounded off the day with sundowners during an evening drive spotting all the local wildlife and then dinner in the main house with the newlyweds, Colin and his charming (and heavily pregnant) wife Charla. The meal was amazing and Loldia’s kitchen reputation for great food is well earned. Introductions to Kenya don’t come much better!!!
Breakfast outdoors in the early morning light followed by Safaris to Lake Nakuru with Rhino, Lions and Giraffe only made the following day even more impressive. Sammy’s knowledge of the wildlife was extensive. The chicken pies and vino at picnic time even better…yum! Dinner in our cottage that evening with views from the veranda over the lake as the sun set was magical and something I will never forget.
Sipping rich Kenyan coffee at dawn over the awakening lake the next day and its ever shifting shape as the papyrus had shifts in the night winds before heading onto Lake Oloiden for a boat ride and close encounter with hippos and a host of pink flamingo. Boarding our flight to the Mara later that afternoon we were so reluctant to leave. If I had one regret about the place is that we didn’t stay longer. We will be back!
