I spent 10 days in the Congo in July with my husband, who was working for the Jane Goodall Institute. We travelled around the Congo, but sadly only had two nights at the wonderful Malonda Lodge. Compared to the other hotels we had either stayed in or seen this was beyond compare! Half an hour south of Pointe Noire; don't be put off by the oil refinery as you approach; once your inside the lodge grounds it is a million miles away!
Grace and Louis were absolutely charming and could not have done more to make us feel welcome. They and their staff truly understand the concept of great service, which is most definitely not widespread in the Congo.
The lodge overlooks the Atlantic ocean and each of the perfectly designed thatched rondellas has a stunning view. Grace is building a large reception area with roof top guest rooms and plans for a spa; it will be amazing when it's finished.
The food in the open air restaurant was superb and completely unfazed by my vegetarian requests. My husband highly praised the fresh seafood.
We would love to return during the turtle breeding season, when turtles come to lay their eggs on the long sandy beach in front of the lodge.
If you're visitng Pointe Noire this place is a MUST!
