We spent 3 weeks in Tanzania and overall, we stayed away from larger lodges... We spent one night at Serengeti Lodge which was pretty good, although less typical than some of the smaller places we stayed at... we also spent one night at the Ngorongoro Sopa...
This was by far the worst hotel of our whole trip... Not the worst hotel in my life but way below the rest of what we have seen in Tanzania...
There are few basic issues with the Ngorongoro Sopa:
1. the hotel is old and it shows
2. most of the rooms do not have a view of the crater but of trees that probably grew since the hotel was built
3. Ngorongoro is a gem and there are barely any hotels on the rim so all of them are always full
4. because of #2 and #3, you will have to fight to get a room with some view... which of course means that the staff is used to it and it shows... I can't really blame them for that ... imagine dealing with thousands of people a year who thought of a nice view from the room and get a garden instead...
One of the guys was really nice and actually got us another room after seeing me arguing with the receptionist for more than 20minutes... I feel sorry for the guy who got our room in return... it was at the far end on one side and you have absolutly no view at all ;-)...
For the rooms, I think everything has been said in the previous reviews and I can confirm... we got the muddy water which really gives you the blues (that was a good one;-)) after a long day of safari... We have stayed in tents, we climbed Kili and we have never seen a water of that color.... dark brown like a mix of 75% mud and 25% water... It disappeared later that night as did the hot water ... but as I said, we are used to rough conditions on trails and we went the cold shower route... With the very cold temperature at night, it was not the best day for it but you survive...
The rooms themselves are old... not bad but not great either... certainly not places you would enjoy staying too long...
Food is OK... what you can expect of a large and very touristy hotel...
That being said, I must say the sunset from the terrasse in front of the reception is worth spending one night there... and overall, the staff was good (except the receptionist but they have the worst job of the hotel there - see points 1 to 5 above)
Conclusion: go there, check the crater, enjoy the sunset and the cold temperature (refreshing after days in Serengeti) and set your expectations fairly low... If you are not ready for that ... forget that place ... but in any case, DO NOT miss the crater itself...
