I have stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in April 2012
Location of the hotel is excellent
Hotel Highland Park is placed in a wonderful location of Gulmarg, J&K. The hotel is located closely to popular Gondola ride which is must watch tourist destination. The scenic beauty around the hotel is simply breath taking. In the scale of 1-10 (10 being the best), I would give it 10/10.
Quality of rooms are pathetic
Quality of rooms is really bad and I would seriously advise all the travelers to doubly check with the pictures I have uploaded before deciding to stay in this place. This place is a typical old heritage hotel, which has completely failed to keep and restore its inherent beauty. The quality of lighting in the room was pathetic. Also, plug points were of those old colonial style and it was difficult for me to update my regular products like camera, phone, ipad etc together. Bukhari of the room (it's an old style of keeping the room warm) was rusted and literally smelling. Note, bukhari system of warming the room was much cleaner in Hotel Pahalgam. Next to bed, they have given a useless old radio system which I feared my toddler might get a electric shock if he touches it out of enthusiasm. Overall, my room was one of the worst room I have ever stayed. Further to mention, I was given room (Room #26) which was at a distance to the main reception area . Was quite difficult to handle with a toddler.
Staff is ill mannered and inflexible.
Staff failed to give me a wake-up call. Also, staff at the restaurant was quite ill mannered. My wife requested one of the fellows to heat their special desert (Shahi Tukda – means royal piece) to heat it. The waiter literally preferred to argue with us on why the desert should not be heated rather than actually doing what we preferred. (Finally he didn't do it and we had to leave the desert). Also, to mention, by Shahi Tukda they mean a useless piece of toast with some stupid cream over it. Must mention, apart from deserts food was good.
Bathrooms were good and modern. But it was certainly not matching with the interiors. It was like combination of classic trousers with a baseball T-shirt!
Overall, this is a classic case of great property location with a complete ruin. As one enters the reception, one can see pictures of Indira Gandhi visiting the place – But that's it. There is no other claim to fame. The restaurant still haunts me with dead bodies of animals like Bear, Deer on their walls and useless staff . At Rs8,000/night, this Hotel is a complete SELL. I would strongly recommend to consider other hotels (which might be similar to this one) but at least don't charge a premium!
Avoid any Guide inside the hotel - They all are fraud!. Let me know if you need contact of a good gu...
