My wife and I just returned from a glorious 10 day stay at The Watermark on Kite Beach in Cabarete. Kite Beach is about 1 mile from the center of the town of Cabarete - or about a 25 minute walk along the beach which I highly recommend. Richard (who was really great, friendly and helpful with everything) from the Watermark, arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the airport, and the driver even stopped and helped us shop for food, beer (Presidente!), etc. since there is a large, fully equipped kitchen at Watermark. The condos are beautiful (and large - about 1500 sqft), basically 2 master suites, huge roofdeck with chairs, loungers, spas - and the best view in all of Cabarete (it's the highest point!). Also, my wife and I are very 'finicky' sleepers, and the beds are extremely comfortable - we slept great every night - and the air conditioning is plentiful (and adjusts easy), so no worries there either! You even get large bottled water cooler in your room which supplies cold and hot water....that was a nice touch.
We normally walked the beach to the restaurants in town (and usually back) about 8 times while there - it's an easy and beautiful walk. For the times you don't want to walk, you can jump on the motorbike 'taxis' or the small private 'car' taxis, for what is about 50 cents each way - each very easy and plentiful to get. It's close enough to town, but quieter at night away from the clubs and music, which is what we wanted as it's only 3 minute ride into 'town'. Plus, for food there are enough options along Kite Beach for lunch - and we made a lot of meals in the kitchen for breakfast/lunch too. The Watermark is located on Kite Beach where the majority of the Kiteboarding activity is - we went to learn and spent 8 of the 10 days taking lessons from John Holzhall, one of the major pioneers and the leading coach and author of several kiting books, whose school (The Method Lodge) is located right across from the Watermark . If you either want to learn to kite, or get even better, then definitely look up THe Method Lodge and talk to John - best coach and instruction in Cabarete! We also did the 27 waterfalls tour near Puerto Plata which was an awesome experience - Richard @ Watermark helped arrange a taxi to take us out there (it's a national park about 30 minutes away) and on the way back we stopped for some great Dominican food at our driver's favorite place.
All, in all, a great trip - we'd go back to Cabarete and Watermark any time - and recommend it highly!
