“Fair”

Breezes Puerto Plata

Stayed at Breezes 5/15 - 5/20 -2008. Overall, it was fair.

The pros:

1) The jacuzzi's by the pool (they're supposed to be 3 cold water and 1 hot water) I especially loved the hot bubbling jacuzzi, even on hot days!

2) The Lighthouse aromatherapy spa massage by the ocean was great - only $55.00 each for 30 minutes. I think you must request you want the massage by the ocean. They bring you outside in a hut, so you're not out in public view but you hear the ocean while receiving an excellent massage. Plenty of other spa choices. We did ours on the last day but should have done more spa activities. Great place for spa action and relaxing in the hot jacuzzi:) By the way, the pool starts off at 4' 4" and ends at 5' 6". I didn't see any 6' deep water, although there could have been some. I don't swim, but I was able to get in the water. Very clean, makes up for the mostly yellow and red flagged beach. There are also 2 large kiddie pools separate from the large pool. The guys at the pool deck tried to entertaintain the crowd with activities, but wasn't a bother to me.

3) The Tour Desk - We did the Monster Truck (fabulous $79.00 per person) and the ATV/dunebuggy tour ($75.00 for 2, we shared a dunebuggy). Loved both tours. Carlos and Nicholas Cage were great drivers! On the Monster Truck, we got to taste fresh cocoa beans, sugar cane, and papaya. The lunch was okay, but the experience was great. We bought books and supplies for the children. They need pencils, notebooks, pens, etc. Bring snacks for the children on the route, 'cause when they see the Trucks coming, they run for them, wave, and look for something from you. Most people wave and everyone isn't looking for something, they're just saying "hi". No candy or money! We bought peanuts, cheese and peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks & baseball cards. It was fun! Very nice people in the Dominican.

The cons:

1) FOOD - I don't normally go on vacation for the food, but if they could change the food, it would bring the resort up one more star in my book. We lived on grilled ham and cheese sandwiches for the first 2 days. Thankfully, we brought snacks from becasue the gift shop and the airport were too high. A regular sized can of Pringles chips costs at least $5.00. We were starving. There are lots of cows in the Dominican Republic, but all the beef was usually cooked tough and chewy. We managed to get into the Japanese, French, and Mexican restaurants. I liked the Japanese and French the best. They only seem to serve 10 tables a night, that's why they book up so fast. If the food was better, I'd probably go back to Breezes. The daiquiri's were sometimes not frozen. The strawberry daquiri's tasted like tart Kool-aid. I liked the Bahama Mama best (when frozen). Coco's 24 hr. wasn't always 24 hrs. and that's where the sandwiches were. The hamburgers were not good. Mainly they had hamburgers, hot dogs, ham and cheese for sandwiches. Sometimes, there was ribs, and mashed potatoes. Jimmy's was all right. I like the pork ribs and fried fish. Fish was very good in the Japanese restaurant - salmon and shrimp. Although, it takes a while to get your food, worth the wait.

2) The gym treadmills are yellow-taped ". They haven't been in service for a while. This should be fixed.

3) The beach - yellow or red flagged every day we were there, mostly red. Watch your swim bottoms, they might fly away. Not many people using the beach, so I wondered why the sand was so dirty. Also, the sand is very deep. Was going to play frisbee on the beach, but seemed too hard. Fun to see the people who used the beach were using the boogie boards.

4) Entertainment - I saw none but karaoke and that depends on participation which was minimal. There was water polo, but everything depending on the audience. The last 2 days the resort was not crowded, I liked that - could be very romantic if you're with your loved one. I also saw one kids show on the weekend. All my dinner times conflicted with show times.

The staff was lukewarm - okay, not memorable, but okay. Most speak okay English. Good place to practice your English or talk baseball.

The room was average and clean, stocked with water and pop. Only one wash rag, but I bought extra from home. We stayed by the tennis courts, nice location, near the front.

The casino was not very busy. Didn't play.

Would I go back? Probably not, unless they fix the food. Must eat.

Just wen this past week and checked out the resort. Like another reader said, there was only one guy at the front desk and it took 45 minutes for them to show us a room. This place looks good on the outside but once you see the rooms you'll change yr mind. It is old, dirty and definintely needs remodeling. The bathroom had lots of mildew and holes in the walls. After we checked out three rooms, we left and went to the Wyndham Tangerine in Cabarete. This place was very nice and clean. As for Breezes, it was a let down.

Well, I decided to say a few things about my trip to Breezes. Just like many of you out there, I came to this website in preparation for the biggest trip I have taken yet in my life. I did find this website very useful, especially in the forums. It was great to ask questions and have feedback so quickly.

Anyway, about the resort. It can only be said so many times that a trip will be what you make of it. I have read other reviews where people have done nothing but find absolutely everything wrong with the place. It makes me wonder just how much of a vacation one can have with an attitude like that. I went in with minimal expectations - a decent room, a decent place to sleep, and decent food without getting sick. Imagine that, the resort achieved all of those expectations! Sure it's not a Holiday Inn for a Hilton, but that's not what I was looking for. My idea for this vacation was time alone with the special man in my life - away from our children, and away from work. It was amazing to see how easy it is to forget everything back home when you are in the tropics!

When we booked our room, we paid the extra for a Superior (the real King sized bed) and that's what we got. Our bathroom was big and the balcony was great. The frequent power outages were a bit much, thankfully they only lasted a few minutes.

Our dining was fine, I did read another traveller's comments about sticking to the same foods, I did find that I did that as well at Jimmy's buffet. As for a la cartes, we managed to get into the Mexican and the Pastafari. I enjoyed my dinners at each, but again, I went in with an open mind and willing to try something new. The service was great.

I was glad that I had read advice on bringing your own floaties. I did find the pool to be too deep. It was harder to relax in the water because you had to keep kicking, but a floatie makes that so much easier. We never had any difficulties finding chairs to put our stuff down on - at the pool or the beach! The beach was nice enough for me, I had never swam in the ocean before. We mostly had yellow flag days, one green flag, and two red flags. People would swim anyway. If you want a calmer ocean, go to Sosua, the beach is beautiful there. The great thing about the beach at the resort was that it was a private beach, so no outside vendors asking you to come and look at their things.

Overall, I did enjoy my first experience on a tropical vacation. I would go back to this same resort, but I want to experience other parts of the south, like Cuba or Mexico.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask, and have a great vacation!

“In need of TLC....”

Breezes Puerto Plata

What to say....this is defintely not a 4 star and barely a 3. We arrived at the front desk and waited 30 minutes to be answered by staff that was obviously bothered by our arrival. The floor was very dirty...we did not even put our backpack down! Then they didn't find our reservation so we asked for the manager and finally got a room. It was dark, botched and cheap...the TV was nice but that's it. Thoroughly rusted safe, botched tiling, dirty caulking in the bathtub, gaps in door through which a nice big cockroach came to visit, a weird window that went half way up the wall (the lower half!!?...ground view), a window in the shower with no curtain (I put a plastic bag over it), old plumbing, loose toilet seat, peeling paint, dirty walls and bed sheets so thin we had to put 3 sets one over the other before we finally didn't see the matress brand label!!

Folks, THIS WAS A RENOVATED, DELUXE UNIT...YES...RENOVATED...!! DELUXE....????

The beach was not clean, full of whatever the sea had thrown home for the last 5 years. The pool looked cool but it was 6 feet deep allover...??? Who goes down south to SWIM in the pool? The food was made of mass produced chemicals and was basically tasteless...the fruit was ok but not the best pick of the crop. The pool DJ was incredibly annoying and loud but that is not much different, sadly, from many other resorts down south. Finally the typical vactioner there seemed to come straight out of a trailer park....loud, obnoxious and visually repelling. We saw a girl scream, kick and punch her boyfriend for AT LEAST 20 minutes by the pool....and I mention this because it was behaviour in line with most other customers.

We stayed 2 nights before I managed to get a cancellation for the remaining 5 nights and went to Puerto Plata to the Gran OASIS Coral Marien. Now that's a hotel...thank god!!

STAY AWAY from this hotel unless you are used to living in a Brooklyn project.

“Overall, a good deal”

Just got back from a week's stay at Breezes, and overall, I was satisfied with my stay. I have read a lot of reviews about this resort, and I have seen both the positives and the negatives. So, here's my take.

(1) Hotel Room = overall satisfactory. Did have a small insect issue in one small area of the room, but considering that these are older buildings and this is a tropical area, it is not entirely unexpected. Rooms were spacious, good selection of TV channels, bar fridge regularly stocked. You tip the maids, you get treated well. However, watch out on Sundays, this is when the villa floors and walls get hosed down on the outside, and apparently, they hose down the doors as well, so water may get in under your door.
(2) Food = just a clarification for all the negative reviews that have been previously posted, this is a different part of the world, food will taste different than what you are used to. That being said, I was happy with all of the restaurant choices. Jimmy's buffet was good, but I found that you pretty well stick with the same items over and over. The Japanese and Paris restaurants are a must. The Mexican restaurant is better than what most made it out to be, and the Pasta restaurant is alright, but not great. Snack bar was much better in the day then at night.
(3) Beach = exactly as reviewed. Red flagged for all of the trip, but the beach was fun. Spacious, lots of chairs. You can get chairs whenever you want, but getting shade is a different story, get there early
(4) Pool = great area. The DJ is a bit annoying at first, but he is there for crowd enjoyment, so you should be able to tolerate it. Warning though, the resort is open to local customers on the weekend, so the pool area and the buffet area are fairly crowded on the weekends.
(5) Things To Do In Resort = golf course is run down a bit, but still alright. Trapeze and rock climbing are fun to do. Some shopping in the resort and local vendors come around a few days during the week. Casino was quiet for the entire trip, so don’t expect any poker tournaments, but you can try out other games.
(6) Staff = excellent group of individuals, I have never seen such diligence to keeping the area clean. Very friendly group, they made the trip so much better.

If you are going on excursions, the Yazika zip-line tour is a must. Just a heads up, the vendors for the off-road excursions are very persistent. If you say no right away, they will leave you alone.

So in conclusion, yeah, this may not be the most modern resort in the area, but it is a good value and is worth a stay. The staff will make it worth the while.
