Stayed at Breezes 5/15 - 5/20 -2008. Overall, it was fair.
The pros:
1) The jacuzzi's by the pool (they're supposed to be 3 cold water and 1 hot water) I especially loved the hot bubbling jacuzzi, even on hot days!
2) The Lighthouse aromatherapy spa massage by the ocean was great - only $55.00 each for 30 minutes. I think you must request you want the massage by the ocean. They bring you outside in a hut, so you're not out in public view but you hear the ocean while receiving an excellent massage. Plenty of other spa choices. We did ours on the last day but should have done more spa activities. Great place for spa action and relaxing in the hot jacuzzi:) By the way, the pool starts off at 4' 4" and ends at 5' 6". I didn't see any 6' deep water, although there could have been some. I don't swim, but I was able to get in the water. Very clean, makes up for the mostly yellow and red flagged beach. There are also 2 large kiddie pools separate from the large pool. The guys at the pool deck tried to entertaintain the crowd with activities, but wasn't a bother to me.
3) The Tour Desk - We did the Monster Truck (fabulous $79.00 per person) and the ATV/dunebuggy tour ($75.00 for 2, we shared a dunebuggy). Loved both tours. Carlos and Nicholas Cage were great drivers! On the Monster Truck, we got to taste fresh cocoa beans, sugar cane, and papaya. The lunch was okay, but the experience was great. We bought books and supplies for the children. They need pencils, notebooks, pens, etc. Bring snacks for the children on the route, 'cause when they see the Trucks coming, they run for them, wave, and look for something from you. Most people wave and everyone isn't looking for something, they're just saying "hi". No candy or money! We bought peanuts, cheese and peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks & baseball cards. It was fun! Very nice people in the Dominican.
The cons:
1) FOOD - I don't normally go on vacation for the food, but if they could change the food, it would bring the resort up one more star in my book. We lived on grilled ham and cheese sandwiches for the first 2 days. Thankfully, we brought snacks from becasue the gift shop and the airport were too high. A regular sized can of Pringles chips costs at least $5.00. We were starving. There are lots of cows in the Dominican Republic, but all the beef was usually cooked tough and chewy. We managed to get into the Japanese, French, and Mexican restaurants. I liked the Japanese and French the best. They only seem to serve 10 tables a night, that's why they book up so fast. If the food was better, I'd probably go back to Breezes. The daiquiri's were sometimes not frozen. The strawberry daquiri's tasted like tart Kool-aid. I liked the Bahama Mama best (when frozen). Coco's 24 hr. wasn't always 24 hrs. and that's where the sandwiches were. The hamburgers were not good. Mainly they had hamburgers, hot dogs, ham and cheese for sandwiches. Sometimes, there was ribs, and mashed potatoes. Jimmy's was all right. I like the pork ribs and fried fish. Fish was very good in the Japanese restaurant - salmon and shrimp. Although, it takes a while to get your food, worth the wait.
2) The gym treadmills are yellow-taped ". They haven't been in service for a while. This should be fixed.
3) The beach - yellow or red flagged every day we were there, mostly red. Watch your swim bottoms, they might fly away. Not many people using the beach, so I wondered why the sand was so dirty. Also, the sand is very deep. Was going to play frisbee on the beach, but seemed too hard. Fun to see the people who used the beach were using the boogie boards.
4) Entertainment - I saw none but karaoke and that depends on participation which was minimal. There was water polo, but everything depending on the audience. The last 2 days the resort was not crowded, I liked that - could be very romantic if you're with your loved one. I also saw one kids show on the weekend. All my dinner times conflicted with show times.
The staff was lukewarm - okay, not memorable, but okay. Most speak okay English. Good place to practice your English or talk baseball.
The room was average and clean, stocked with water and pop. Only one wash rag, but I bought extra from home. We stayed by the tennis courts, nice location, near the front.
The casino was not very busy. Didn't play.
Would I go back? Probably not, unless they fix the food. Must eat.
