“Great Christmas treat”

Hotel San Roque

4 Jan 2008

We spent five nights at Hotel San Roque over Christmas 2007 and agree with all the comments of the previous reviewer.

This is a family run hotel and it runs beautifully - this is a family that is really interested in running a great hotel and providing a great experience for guests and it shows in numerous little ways that really matter. The Christmas Eve celebration was lovely as the previous reviewer said - and the whole hotel was decorated and transformed without any disruption or noise for guests. The same night, all of the special decorations and marquees, lighting etc were taken down during the night - again with no disruption to guests. We were given quality leather goods as little Christmas gifts outside our bedroom door on Christmas morning. A nice bottle of wine in the room with chilled glasses on the first night... a Christmas card from the chambermaids (yes, signed by them!). So, somebody here is clearly thinking about the guest experience all the time.

The hotel is a lovely boutique hotel of great character and style (but not so over the top as to make you feel awkward or uncomfortable). It is really well located for the town of Garachico and we played golf at the nearby Buenavista (Ballesteros designed) club which was wonderful - stunning clubhouse and outdoor infinity pool built into the rocks.

This is a very interesting part of Tenerife and a wonderful romantic retreat. Highly recommended.

“The splendid San Roque”

Hotel San Roque

We stayed here for Christmas 2007. This is the best hotel we've ever stayed in. The hotel itself is beautiful, with lots of interesting art and furniture. The rooms are amazing. We had the pleasure of staying in the Torre for a few nights, which was incredible. The service in the hotel is perfect. The rooms were cleaned several times a day, but very inobtrusively. Nothing is too much trouble. We bought a painting from a local gallery and asked the hotel if they could provide us with cardboard to wrap the picture for the flight home. They took the painting away and returned with it expertly wrapped in bubble-wrap and cardboard. Fantastic! We took part in the Christmas Eve programme which consisted of a local choir and an exquisite meal afterwards. The hotel staff helped make this a very memorable Christmas experience for us.

We stayed here for two nights whilst travelling round the island and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a split level room which was very interesting architecturally. Jacuzzi bath seemed unusually placed in lounge/hall area - but was very nice.

The hotel itself is very calm and peaceful - a great place to come and de-stress! Nice pool area which is beautifully lit at night. Breakfasts were lovely - remember you can have a hot breakfast also - we did not realise this till we heard others order. Otherwise a good selection of meats, cheeses, breads, fruit etc and very nice coffee on offer.

We did not eat dinner there but the menu did look interesting.

We were excited by the previous review's mention of a "Help Yourself Cava Bar" but would stress this is not a free bar but that glasses of Cava are about 4 Euros each - however nice to sip on a very hot day!!!

Staff were very pleasant and friendly.

The town itself is beautiful - lots of old buildings to admire not forgetting the Museum of the Volcano. We did eat at Gaspars (restaurant down the road) but were disappointed and could not recommend it as our meal was very poor although the lovely man who served us was run off his feet that night!

Lots of nice places to have a drink and some tapas which is what we did other night.

We will return to this hotel again and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

This hotel is a delight. A feast for the eyes. A thoughtfully crafted conversion of a grand house which has been carefully furnished and decorated. The artwork is appropriate and stylish.
Apart from the Jacuzzis, the rooms are superb.
The roof terrace is well worth a visit.
Meals are al fresco around the pool and garden. A perfect setting for perfect dining. The daily set menus are imaginative and perfectly executed by a very gifted Chef.
Staff are respectful and always kind and helpful.
This really is a perfect place. A haven for those who appreciate fine things.

    • Liked — The strong emphasis on style - staff, buildings, furnishings and food
    • Disliked — The Jacuzzi in the room is unecessary and vulgar - also they are unhygenic.

“Very chic, very relaxing”

We stayed here for a couple of nights in March 2007 and thought it was wonderful. The building and decor is very cool, the pool is lovely (and heated!), the service pleasant. I especially liked the help-yourself champagne/cava bar in the courtyard, and the roof terrace is terrific.

We paid a bit extra for a duplex room which was fun, although hazardous if you need the bathroom in the night and have to negotiate the spiral staircase after overdosing on the cava. These rooms are a bit quieter than the standard ones, which give onto the courtyard.

This hotel is billed as a "chic retreat" and has been advertised in the posh Sunday supplements, so quite a few of the people staying fancied themselves tremendously, plenty of linen and Birkenstocks going on, a lot of Tarquins and Jocastas round the pool. All very different to Los Cristianos!

Like other tripadvisor reviewers, we would heartily recommend Casa Gaspar for fabulous grilled meat and fish dishes, only five minutes away and half the price of the hotel restaurant. There's also a very good tapas bar at the end of the street (can't remember the name but it's just a one-room affair and they cook everything fresh for you).

We'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants something a bit different, a bit classy and a bit decadent for a few nights, as part of a trip round the island. If you can afford a full week here, then good for you, go for it!
