To all the recent reviewers: did we stay at the same hotel?! I can hardly believe it.
I never book a hotel without Trip Advisor anymore. After reading the reviews posted for the Beverly Hills Hotel here, I was sure that I could not go wrong with booking it for a romantic night on Valentine's Day. Let me tell you - that's one Valentine’s Day I will not soon forget. And not in a good sense.
We booked a bungalow for $600+ a night. I was taken to the furthest bungalow on the property - no sweat, I told myself, we'll have more privacy this way.
It took me a couple minutes to realize that there was some constant noise coming from the outside. I looked out, and saw some kind of a loud fan in the upper corner of the building, which was, as I gathered, part of the room's air-conditioning system. It makes you feel like you are sleeping in a car with your motor running. And THEN I took a look around the room. Talk about DATED! The upper edges of the wallpaper - or, to be exact, wall draping (as it was some kind of silk covering) - was black. Not sure if it was mold or dust, or both! All around the room. I couldn't stand looking at it, it was so disgusting. The carpet also saw better days. And once you use the toilet, it keeps running for what seemed like forever.
I called and asked if I could be switched to another room. They suggested a room "in the main building". Surely, if I wanted to be in a building - as opposed to a bungalow, I would have booked the Peninsula or the Four Seasons (which I am now very sorry I did not). They then offered a bungalow suite - for a whopping $1400 a night. I was so desperate to save what was left of the night, I agreed. But when I asked how long it would take to do the switch, they said "up to an hour".
So, we waited. It was getting close to 9 pm, and my husband, who arrived soon after me, was hungry. My plan to have a nice quiet meal via room service was on hold - we still did not know what room we'd end up in! The Polo Lounge, the only restaurant on the property, was booked solid. Twenty minutes passed, and with no news on the room switch, we just left the hotel. That's right - turned in the keys, and hurried home, stopping by to get some champagne and strawberries along the way.
Do you think anybody even tried to stop us? No way! No apologies, not even an attempt to rectify the situation - nothing! If you don't count the valet's effort to keep my husband's car - just because his name was not on the reservation! That's right - they take the car and your name, park it, but when you want to take it back - and your name is not on any of the rooms' reservations - they refuse to give it back to you! My husband, of course, would not stand for such nonsense, but I wonder how many cars the valet got to keep that way?! :)
Anyway, if you are used to true luxury, stay away from this dump. At all cost.
