Being a fan of all things medieval, and also not adverse to sampling a little wine now and again, I was quite happy to take a Saturday drive up to Castello di Amorosa. It is impressive when you get to the top of the drive and see it, although it does look a little truncated - like a giant stepped on it and squashed it a bit. You can tell that some care was taken in the design and execution of the building. It is (happily) not a Disney castle. There is a moat that still has to be filled with water. That will add to the first impression.

There are frescoes in a huge main hall, ancient chandeliers, interesting oak and iron doors, beautiful cellars with vaulted brick ceilings. I personally think they should pipe in some Gregorian chant or other period music, not so loud as to drown out the tour guide, but as background to add to the ambience.

Just when you are getting into the mood, the guide takes you into a room filled with start of the art, modern stainless steel fermenting vats! Now I know this is a winery and I actually enjoyed seeing the old, dusty wine bottles stacked up and the oak barrels in the cellars. But, this was a jolt and didn't add anything to the tour. They should have put these modern parts of the winery tour at the very end for those who want to see it. Leave the rest of us in our medieval reverie.

The wines themselves are nothing to write home about (in my opinion... but I am far from an expert). The castle is fun and even kids (only allowed on the 10 a.m. tour) might enjoy it. Be warned that there is a lot of walking, much in semi-darkness in the cellars. There are some staircases too. If you can do them, you get a great view from one of the castle turrets.

Most in our group found the Docent quite rude and rushed. I thought he was probabably just too focused on selling wine. That's reasonable when a tour is complimentary. When you are charging me $25 just to walk through, you should allow me to take pictures without bossy instruction and without complaining about slow group members to other group members. Once I got home, I realized he was not too focused on wine sales after all: he filled my order incorrectly. When I went to their website to complain, their customer service link built an email addressed to a mispelled domain! Needless to say, once I fixed the domain and emailed them, I got no response whatsoever. Some of the worst service I have ever seen in 25 years in the service industry. I won't recommend them to guests.

We recently toured Castello di Amorosa. We absolutely loved it. The tour guides were courteous and informative. Daryl Sattui's passion and attention to detail shows everywhere. It has only been open a couple months and there are a few items to finish up inside and outside, but I'm glad they opened it before every last nit was perfect. I particularly liked how Daryl made it like a castle created over multiple centuries (basically similar to something that might have been built about 12th century and added on over the next couple centuries).

If you get the chance, take the tour! My only complaint is that the waiting list is so long you can't get right in. Expect a few weeks or a month's wait.

Highly recommended and now one of our favorite things about the Napa Valley.

Castello di Amorosa is a brand new castle that is amazing and the tour is a must. The wine tasting was great with a choice of six of their wine and the view was just as good if not better than Sterling vineyard (which charged money to even go to the top of the gondola to see the view and the wine wasn’t all that.) The tour is a must because the castle took fourteen years to build and they didn’t miss a beat. This castle has an authentic torture chamber with cells, a beautifully quaint church, towers, party rooms, and so on. You do need to make a reservation ahead of time however. We did not do this but the president was still kind enough to walk us around the parts of the castle he thought we would really enjoy. And enjoy we did, we loved this place.

My wife and I went to Castello di Amorosa since it was supposed to be a Tuscan style castle. Having just come back from Italy, it was sorely disappointing. The outside is impressive and has the look of a Tuscan castle, but when you go inside, there's red brick and blue stone in the courtyard. They use cobblestone in Italy!

There was a small chapel there with a cross at the alter firmly seated in concrete in a 5 gallon white plastic barrel! There were frescoes there, but they were all of knights in battle. If you've ever been to Italy, all of their frescoes are of christianity in some fashion, the most popular being the Virgin Mary and Jesus.

This place looks more like a place trying to look like Italy, not actually looking like it.

The wines are sub par, maybe because the vineyard is young, but they probably don't really care. Going here reminds us more and more why we don't go to Napa anymore. If you want to go wine tasting in California, do yourself a favor and go to Sonoma Valley or the Russian River Valley. Much better wines and more passionate winemakers who do it for the love of it, not for the tourism.
