Being a fan of all things medieval, and also not adverse to sampling a little wine now and again, I was quite happy to take a Saturday drive up to Castello di Amorosa. It is impressive when you get to the top of the drive and see it, although it does look a little truncated - like a giant stepped on it and squashed it a bit. You can tell that some care was taken in the design and execution of the building. It is (happily) not a Disney castle. There is a moat that still has to be filled with water. That will add to the first impression.
There are frescoes in a huge main hall, ancient chandeliers, interesting oak and iron doors, beautiful cellars with vaulted brick ceilings. I personally think they should pipe in some Gregorian chant or other period music, not so loud as to drown out the tour guide, but as background to add to the ambience.
Just when you are getting into the mood, the guide takes you into a room filled with start of the art, modern stainless steel fermenting vats! Now I know this is a winery and I actually enjoyed seeing the old, dusty wine bottles stacked up and the oak barrels in the cellars. But, this was a jolt and didn't add anything to the tour. They should have put these modern parts of the winery tour at the very end for those who want to see it. Leave the rest of us in our medieval reverie.
The wines themselves are nothing to write home about (in my opinion... but I am far from an expert). The castle is fun and even kids (only allowed on the 10 a.m. tour) might enjoy it. Be warned that there is a lot of walking, much in semi-darkness in the cellars. There are some staircases too. If you can do them, you get a great view from one of the castle turrets.
