Booked a two nite stay right before Christmas. Stayed here many times before, had the usual high expectations. Wrong!

Had no problem paying for the two nite stay a month in advance, as we had always had a great stay here. Arrived at the hotel with a receipt for "payment in full" (it said that right on the receipt). Were told we could not check in until we paid an "additional charge" to cover "incidentals". What incidentals?? Inn does not have bar, not have a gym, not have a spa, does not over room service for snacks or meals. No laundry service. So what "incidentals" were they covering?

Asked to speak with a manager, and was handed a phone with the rudest, most arrogant woman I have ever met on the other end. She was horrible. She would not let us have our room key until the additional charges were paid, and would not refund our money even though she was not letting us into our room. Horrible, horrible experience.

When we asked the manager what "incidentals" were being covered by the additional charges, she changed her position and said that the charges were to cover "loss and damage" to the unit. We had stayed here a dozen time previously, and never incurred any "loss" or "damage". She would not accept cash to cover the bogus "incidentals" charges, insisting that a hold must be placed on a credit card. For what? What sort of scam is this?

These charges were never assessed in any previous stay here.

The Inn is lovely, but the management is horrible. Avoid this place.

After two letters to the managsment at Inns by the Sea, I still have not received any kind of response to my complaint. They simply do not care. These people apparently honed their skills at a Motel 6. They do not value their customers, just their customers $$$. My earnest advice: stay somewhere else. Unless, of course, you enjoy the abuse.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I deeply regret that your stay fell so far from expectations and I apologize that I haven’t been able to contact you before now. We failed to communicate clearly at several points that led to frustration. I want to take just a moment to clarify a few points of concern.

Payment in full for the reservation is not standard practice. We ask for payment of the first night stay plus tax to confirm a reservation. As a very small inn, we do not overbook and want to ensure our guest’s comfort. In this instance, we were pleased to extend a special offer to you on this reservation that paired a deep discount with agreement to full pre-payment.

As part of our check-in process, we ask for a photo id and credit card. We do authorize a minimal amount of $30.00 per night, in the case of incidentals. This is not a charge, simply a standard security authorization that inns and hotels include at check-in. You rightly point out that we do not have a bar, gym or spa. However, we do offer laundry service and the purchase of small snacks such as chocolate covered strawberries, cheese platters or wine/champagne upon request. We also consider loss/breakage to fall under that “incidental” umbrella.

I understand that practices at the inn have evolved over time and I heartily apologize that this information was not communicated clearly. I agree that this kind of misunderstanding is very frustrating and I want to stress that it is not our intention to insult or “scam” our guests.

I am also dismayed to hear of the poor quality of your breakfast. We are regularly complimented on the delicious and lovely breakfast spread. As an small, intimate inn, we can make mistakes and this was, regrettably, a rare instance of a disappointing breakfast.

We take your concerns seriously and I have spoken with the inn manager and each staff member. We value your opinion, especially when we fall short of our standards for exceptional service and guest experience. We are committed to assisting our guests in making the most of their time in our small, romantic inn and it is feedback like this that pushes us to reflect and improve.

Best Regards,
Felina Smith

My husband and I stayed at the Inn at Depot Hill on our road trip over New Years. We stayed in the "Paris" room. The decor was divine and even my manly husband didn't mind the French details. The fireplace in the middle of the room makes the accommodation cozy and creates a natural barrier between the bed area and the living area. We opted to have our breakfast brought to the room (breakfast is included!) in the morning and it was delicious! Our only complaint is that the hot tub was SO hot we could only put our feet in. We'll be back!

We could not have asked for a more beautiful, clean, and very friendly location to spend a few days after Thanksgiving to relax and visit with friends. Everyone there did all they could to make our stay more than pleasant. I have been to many, many places and the only place which comes close to this one, excluding pricing, is The Residence Inn in Cherry Hill, NJ. We have also stayed at Asilomar for over 20 years and although it is very nice, it cannot compare with Inn at Depor Hill.

The regular price is way too much but we asked for the off time discount and received it. Our stay was from Sunday until Wednesday and we paid around $160 per night, although that is a lot of money, we feel we were given much in return and we are looking forward to a return visit very soon. Discount pricing is only offered on certain days and certain times of the year.

If you are looking for a really beautiful place either for a family, friends or a romantic weekend or week, we encourage you to stay here.

Room tip: We can only suggest one room since we have only been there once, but The Library Room is excellent for a family of three or for singles who need their own bed. The ambiance is fantastic. We heard no noise at all even though facing the front of the Inn and a busy street.

Hotel was unwilling to accommodate a cancellation or date change when wife and i became ill two days prior to arriving. We were looking forward to staying at this highly recommended hotel but now we'd stay ANYWHERE but this hotel. We were willing to change the date because we were too sick to travel that weekend but they would not accommodate that request.

BAD customer service ....

Had a nice stay. The hotel is very cute and quaint... But the bed was horrible. It was very saggy on both sides. I even had to put a pillow under the mattress cover my side just to try to make it level. I'm not a big tv person, but the tv was the type you would find in an r.v. About 9" screen. For the upper end price, this was very disappointing.

Room tip: I stayed in the railroad baron room. Just not worth the money.
