We stayed in Room 205 (Ocean View Lodge) on Father's Day weekend. We brought our 2 girls, ages 3.5 and 5 yrs. This hotel worked out GREAT for us. The suite is more like an apartment. A funky knotty pine kitchen, dining area with table and 4 chairs, brick fireplace, really large living room with pull out couch (plenty of room for pack n play or roll away), TV and then a king bed in the bedroom (another TV). We enjoyed sitting outside on the little patio while the girls played on the lawn. We also enjoyed having a fire on a chilly Carmel summer night. The basket they deliver for breakfast was a bonus. Granola, milk, juice, pastry or bagel and fruit. No need to go out. Bruno's Market down the street is a good place to pick up a few groceries and wine. They have a good deli too.

There is a city playground/park less than two blocks down the street. We discovered BBQ pits in the adjacent city parking lot. Did not use, but thought it was a good option.

I would recommmend driving to the beach, as the hike up the hill might be too tiring after playing on the beach. I am a Carmel native, and have stayed in lots of hotels in Carmel. We all agreed that we would come back and stay at this hotel- lots of room for your dollar. They give AAA discount.

“Ocean View?”

Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge

7 Jul 2007

We stayed here for three days. The premises are nice. The room was clean.

However, the ocean view---well, the ocean is a long ways away. Our view was a six foot wall surrounded the patio--like the D block at Alcatrez--you couldn't see a thing.....you would have to stand on the lawn chair and then you would see the roof! The continental breakfast basket delivered to your door was nice....it was varied each day--there is microwaves and small frigs in the rooms...that helps....gas fireplace. Nice walking distance to downtown.

“Adored this place!”

This was a birthday trip that will ALWAYS be remembered!
We wanted something romantic, and that's exactly what we got!
Not only is the staff SO kind and helpful, they helped us find the PERFECT place to have a birthday dinner at.
The room was beyond what we had ever expected, with a jacuzzi tub all alone in an alcove with its own window and fireplace.
The king size bed with its down comforter was the best there was!

Breakfast baskets arrive at your door before you awake...and they have fresh fruit, cereal, pastries and juice...coffee and tea are in the room along with a fridge and microwave.

Its within walking distance of everything you want to see and its only three or so blocks away from the mission.

Here were the details that really made it wonderful for us!
We had AAA, which gave us a fantastic rate for both nights!
Beware that directions on MapQuest are very tricky...for best results call the hotel for directions!
We stayed in room 115, which they told us had the best view and they were right!
Lastly bring a camera and the love of your life to make it complete!

“Not Pet Friendly! They Lie!”

Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge

I have been a guest of this Inn many times. In fact I will not stay anywhere else because I love it so much! The staff is always super friendly and accommodating, the rooms are beautiful, and the breakfast basket is very good too. But I am saddened to say I will NEVER return back to this Inn because of the way my boyfriend and I were treated. They advertise that they are pet friendly. We decided to bring our 5 1/2 lb Chihuahua on vacation with us this time because it was my 5th year anniversary with my boyfriend, we always see so many dogs around Carmel every time we go, we thought it would be nice to bring her along too. We checked their web site to see if they were pet friendly and it said they were. So we brought her along. We stayed one night and kept her with us the whole time, she was never left alone in the room by herself at all! We came back to our room at around 3:00 to find a note on our door saying to "come to the front desk at once!" We were then told by the front desk that the manager said we had to leave because we were not in a "Pet friendly" room. Nowhere on their website does it say that you can bring a pet but only in specific rooms. We did however find out that there was a $20 fee which we did not know about. We gladly would have paid that fee and we did. What I don't appreciate is the way we were treated and the way we were made to feel. Totally over exaggerating the situation with saying that people with allergies could be allergic to dogs and now they had to "decontaminate" the room because our little 5 1/2 lb dog was in there. Also we were told that we could stay our other night but would have to pay a $100 fee! Supposedly because they were going to have to take down the drapes and get everything cleaned! Well if we already stayed one night with our little contaminated dog in the room wouldn’t they have to clean it anyway? So why try and get money out of us? Not just a small fee, but $100!! I think we were totally taken advantage of and were treated very poorly!

“Average overall experience”

Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge

We stayed in the Superior Ocean View room 120 and it was a nice room. They have done some good things to this property - granite countertops, stone tile floors, etc. There is a nice gas fireplace in the room. The bed was comfortable and the room was nice and clean. Just be aware, the ocean fog can be very heavy as it was all week while we were there... Superior Ocean View is just a name - it doesn't mean you will really see the ocean. I will say that it appeared, if the weather was clear, that this room would have the best ocean view of the inns around Carmel. There is also off the street parking, which is hard to find around Carmel. For the price, there are nicer properties.

Negatives:
*The Horizon Inn is on the truck route. We loved sleeping with the windows open, but at 7AM the delivery trucks start running, non-stop and it is a rude awakening.
*The Horizon Inn is not on the walking maps of town, as it is the farthest Inn from the central area - now that means just a couple of blocks, but it got old by the fourth day we were there.
*The breakfast baskets were not worth it. I would rather they just give us back $25 per day and keep the basket.
*The staff didn't seem really "up" on things around Carmel itself. There is a very nice health club in the Carmel Mall, about 6 blocks away. They sent us about 3 miles away to a shopping center with a worn out health club. When we asked the desk clerk to make a dinner reservation for us, he seemed offended (though he did end up making it for us).
