I just returned from a stay at the Cobblestone Inn on Aug. 30. I spent a LOT of time researching out different Inns in Carmel, reading all the reviews. I'm very glad we chose the Cobblestone. I went with my sister in law, and wanted something that was close to town. We were only about 1 block away from Ocean Ave. (which is the main strip of shops, and leads down to the beach) The location was ideal, although parking on this Labor Day weekend WAS a problem! After driving around for about 10 or 15 minutes, we were happy to finally find a place only 2 blocks away from the Inn. And decided we'd just leave the car there, and walk wherever we had to go. We tried checking in 2 hrs.early, but was told that we couldn't. They did however, offer to hold our bags for us, and to help ourselves to freshly baked cookies (two kinds!) and coffee in the lobby. They even offered to put on a fresh pot of coffee for us! We went out for shopping and lunch, and returned to check in around 7:00, so we missed the complimentary wine and cheese. The lobby is really adorable, and very cozy. The worker came out to light the fireplace and candles to make it even cozier, as guests milled about visiting, and perusing the basket of menus of local restaurants. Our room was as pictured on the website. It was very clean. Sheets and comforter were very soft, although the bed had a bit of a dip in the middle, so you tended to roll towards the dip in the bed.(although we were told it was a new bed) Also, the duvet cover was a bit outdated, looked like from the 80's. But that is not a big deal. There was one recessed light in the room, which was kind of hanging down a bit from the ceiling, but I told them about it upon checking out, and they right away asked their maintenance guy to look into it. There's no air conditioning in the room, but you could open the windows. The other reviewer was telling the truth about some of the shutter slats being broken, so yeah, you do have to manually turn a few by hand, but that's not a big deal either.
Turn down service was provided, and chocolates left for us. Although I read some reviews about thin walls, we didn't hear anyone else, and the Inn WAS booked solid too. Nice to have the morning paper delivered to our doorstep.
The next morning, we went down for breakfast, and I'd say that it was a bit lackluster. I was expecting some bacon or sausage or meat of some kind. There was granola, fruit, muffins, oatmeal, potatoes and scrambled eggs with cheese. Not bad, just thought it could've been better. I also overheard a few other guests making the same comments about there not being any meat on the buffet. But it was ok.
We paid $180.00 for a room with a queen bed. Pretty steep, yet the location was perfect, even if their were a few little glitches. I would still recommend going there.
Also, there is a fireplace in the room (we stayed in #22) and a note on the mantle that says lighting anything else in the fireplace could be hazardous to our health. Then it said to be sure and turn the fireplace off before leaving the room. Huh?? Upon checking out, I asked about it, and the lady at the front desk said, "oh, those darn kids. They're supposed to show you how to work the fireplace when they show you to your room!" But I told her nobody showed us to our room, they just told us how to get there. It would be helpful if there was a card explaining how to light the gas fireplace. But still, all in all, we had a really fun trip in Carmel, and very much enjoyed staying at the Cobblestone Inn. I was glad that we took the advise of other reviewers, and ate at the Forge in the Forest for dinner. Superb!! Also thoroghly enjoyed lunch (twice!) at Le Boissiere Patisserie in The Carmel Plaza, a block away! Darling french cafe!
