I called Hofsas House directly for an 84th birthday celebration. 4 adults, and one dog. I was explicit that we did not want any stairs due to two elderly mature travelers with bad knees.
When I learned that they did not have elevators, I was told they had a cottage. We were assured the cottage had access that did not require any elevators.
We arrived at 10 p.m. I double-checked about the stairs. We were told there were only 5 or 6. I was a little worried and then confused. The shortest stairwell had 15 steps.
We were exhausted, and there were no rooms available on the street level. Our birthday cottage was impossible to reach because it is only accessible via stairwells. We were given 2 very small rooms near the back parking lot for the same price of the cottage with kitchenette. No $ breaks.
We stayed one night then went over to the Monterey Bay Lodge where the renovated rooms were larger, the price was less expensive, the staff very friendly, and NO stairs. The staff cheered us up and our adjacent rooms were next to the pool area.
If you are traveling with individuals who have knee difficulties, don't go to the Hofsas House. We still enjoyed Carmel even though the area is built on inclines. It's the stairs that are the problem. I recommend Monterey Bay as it is flat and the drive to Carmel is about 5 minutes.
