We wanted somewhere to stay between Stockholm and Oslo and fancied staying in a B&B away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Elizabeth, the owner, is delightful and made us very welcome. She has a self-contained selection of bedrooms, kitchen and washing facilities upstairs in her picture-postcard home. In the morning, the sun streamed through the windows, as we ate our breakfast in the upstairs breakfast room. It was lovely just to hear the sounds of birds and nature around us and there's a stream next to the house.
There are lots of places to walk in the area, which is full of pine forests and lakes (take some walking boots, as some of the paths can get a bit boggy in places). Some of the lakes have saunas next to them, although it would be worth asking at the tourist office in Monkfors how you pay to use them.
Monkfors is slightly larger than I expected and has a supermarket open in the evenings. There's a restaurant and hotel in the town serving food, although check for opening times.
