“Indian Wells Hotel is not a resort”

Indian Wells Resort Hotel

30 May 2008

It really is puffing to refer to this property as a resort. It's a three story motel style building with a pool. They add on $18 per day "resort fee" and charge you room tax on the fee. The fee supposedly includes a Continential Breakfast (muffins, ceral, juice), a newspaper which they put in the lobby and unless you are the first ones there forget it, WiFi (weak signal during day, ok late evening, and happy hour appitizers (bean dip/salsa and chips). Its insulting to the patrons. The staff was mixed. Some very good and service oriented, others reflected the sour mood of the patrons. The new decort is OK. My room had a foul smell upon arrival but disappeared after awhile. The safe was non-operable. The older style building is very non ADA friendly with one elevator per wing. The Priceline rating of 3 stars is far too generous and does a dis-service to those depending on their ratings for hotel choices.

I stayed here for 4 nights with my wife recently and was very underwhelmed. The hotel itself is just ok without any major problems but the accumulation of all the minor problems was the disappointing part. They tack on an $18 a day "resort fee" which includes "Deluxe" breakfast (Assortment of stale breads with oatmeal and cereal), parking and wifi. We asked the maid for fresh towels and found the same old ones just folded back in our bathroom. The staff seemed unhappy and managed to check us in without smiling once (Like they were doing us a favor by letting us stay at their "resort"). The pool is nice and the hotel is situated in a decent location. Overall I would not reccomend it. There are plenty of other nice hotels in the area that would show appreciation for your visit.

I think we got ripped off at $179 a night, but it was Stagecoach weekend, so what do you do? Anyway, the room was clean, the staff was friendly and it served it's purpose. Would definitely stay there again! And the buffet they had was AWESOME!

I booked this hotel for $63 on priceline, then the hotel adds another mandatory $18 "resort" fee upon check-in. Not good.

The floors are as noisy as other reviewers have said, but I got a room on the 3rd level, so no worries there. The rooms facing Hwy. 111 do get some serious traffic noise, too.

The rooms is not quite as nice as a Best Western. The pillows and mattress are lumpy. There is no sound-proofing. The TV gets a limited number of channels. In my room, only 1 of 3 lamps was actually functioning. The bathroom is quite cramped.

The best feature is the strong wi-fi Internet signal.

This hotel wildly exceeded my expectations. The price was so reasonable--compared with other Palm Springs properties--that I was afraid it would be a dump. Not at all! I took my two sons (12 and 18) for spring break and we had a wonderful time. The hotel in general, and our room in particular were spotless. We had a one bedroom suite with a bath and a half. It was very large, comfortable, and had nice amenities. We had a lovely view of the golf course and mountains. The included breakfast is a very nice continental breakfast... cereal, fruit, breads and coffee. Don't expect a full-breakfast buffet. A few suggestions and observations:
- You'll need a car. There is a lot to do in the greater Palm Springs area, but nothing is walking distance from the hotel. Indian Wells is a 20-30 minute drive from Palm Springs.
- Poolside dining is limited and a bit expensive.
- This is the old "Desi Arnaz Western Hills Resort" built by Desi and Lucy in 1957. Very cool history. Take the time to look at all the fabulous photos displayed in the lobby area. Unfortunately, the 50s decor and architecture are gone... obviously the hotel has been renovated to look new.
- The Indian Wells Resort is a perfect place to relax. Don't expect a lot of "resort activities" like exercise classes, happy hours or the like. Its not that sort of place.
- Be aware that you will be charged a nightly "resort fee" of $18. I find this to be a weird add-on, but it seems to be the local custom of all the area resorts, including the Miramonte.
We loved it and would be very happy to return.
