This hotel has undergone a major renovation that has been completed within the past year and it now truly is on par with other Marriott properties. All employees were quite pleasant and possessed that Marriott "what can we do for you" attitude. Definitely a trait that helps to separate it from the other major chains.

In addition, the rooms and public areas were very nice, especially with the face lift updates -- lobby and bar has a very contemporary look/feel. Although this hotel is located in a business district, it is very close to all major interstates in the area and <10 minutes from La Jolla Cove and downtown La Jolla. Beaches are <15 minutes away via Interstate 5.

Very much enjoyed this hotel and would definitely stay again when in the San Diego area. Great experience!!

“July 4th weekend stay”

My wife and I just returned from the fourth of July weekend and stayed for three nights at the Marriott La Jolla.

The hotel has obviously been remodeled recently, with upscale modern decor in the front desk area and nice furnishings in room. The bed and duvet bedding were excellent. (better than at home) The granite topped dresser is nice touch. Did not figure out coffee maker was in room, hidden behind a false door in dresser until about to check out. Room was quite small for a Marriott. Also, between location being rather far from beach, unimpressive pool area and very small rooms, not a family friendly hotel. It is in the middle of a corporate park and very close to large mall.

Small gripe. Hotel should not charge $18/day to park being so far from beach and downtown. Easily remedied. At least two other parking garages adjacent to hotel. Small garage directly west of hotel only charges a maximum of $10 per day. (typical garage with no in/out privileges) Apparently, this garage does not even place an employee in the little booth on weekends to collect the fee's. We were able to drive in and out all weekend and never paid anything. Surprised more people did not catch on to this, as only a handful of cars used this lot and dozens were in the expensive hotel lot.

Weird pool area with very small and simple pool inside, surrounded by exercise machines. There was a second small pool outside, both with nothing but old concrete decking.

Overall nice hotel, but not worth more than $100/night. (Booked on priceline for $90) Great for business travelers, would not recommend for families.

“Excellent Marriott”

Wonderful hotel. We asked for room on upper floor received it. Sometimes you're treated as a "low rent rendezvous" customer when you book on Priceline. Not at this hotel. They were accomodating and friendly. We checked in about 1 pm-no problem. $18 to park is always a bummer but nice garage with in/out privileges. Way less than SF for that person who was grumbling. Nice hotel and great restaurants below. Walking distance to University Town Center shopping mall and a nice little sushi place and starbucks across the parking lot. We saw Tony Hawk having coffee with his wife and new baby...teency! Great flat screen tv and views-cozy beds. Away from the bustle of the beaches but close enough. Found a great mexican place called Bahia on LaJolla Blvd-for cheap eats. Ate at Island Prime in Harbor Island on 4th of July-excellent food. Although crab was way too expensive and it had been frozen-but other than that. ,,,Excellent views. Great waiter. Good salad, bread and bar. Reviews did say the meat/seafood was too pricey for what you get-that was true.

“Nice Upscale Hotel - Area a Little Boring”

I stayed at the Mariott in La Jolla, California for a business conference. It is a very nice property and the accomodations were very nice.

However, the area doesn't lend itself to activities very well. Although the beach and golf course is within 'reasonable' distance, there is nothing to speak of within walking distance (including decent restaurants).

Services, pool, and hotel accomodates were all very good...no complaints!

“What service??”

Very small rooms. Smelled like stale cigarettes even though hotel is non-smoking. AC didn't work well. $18 per day to park. We broke a glass, and it took more than an hour for housekeeping to come even though they knew we had small children in the room. We asked for a roll away bed, and they never provided one which was OK as it would not have fit in the room. We left for a new hotel where we could be cooler at 5:30 p.m. with out checking out or talking to them at all. We stopped when leaving the next day to verify that we did not leave anything in the room, and they had rented out the room to someone else. When we asked about this they proceeded to lie about the room being rented, then they stated they checked at 1 or 2 in the morning and since no one was there they rented out the room. When asked if it is standard to check peoples rooms at one in the morning they stated that it was if they had reason to believe it was empty. When asked if it was rented then at 1 or 2 in the morning he stated that it may have been earlier. The time then was hanged midnight. I asked when the new people checked in, and was told they have no way of knowing. I stated that was incorrect as their computer system tells them all of that information. It finally came out that between 5:30 when we left with out saying a word, and 8:30 when the new renters checked in, they had determined that we were no longer there, and had cleaned the room and re-rented it. Even though we paid for the use of the room, they got twice the money. I was just glad we did not come back later that night and try to get into someone else's room. They did not offer a refund when asked nor would they apologize for lying to us. A refund would have been fine as they got paid for the room twice, but they did not even waive our parking fees. A total customer service nightmare, we expected more from Mariott.
