Nice idea, but the cutesy cottage fell far below expectations. The bed was not a queen, but actually a full. the bedroom overlooks the parking lot, so you cannot enjoy it with the shades drawn if you want privacy. the heater didn't work, so we were cold most of the time (they did provide 1 space heater, which we used in the bedroom. they only provided enough firewood for 2 fires. we had to ask for more. you would thnk that because we had called and told them that the heater didn't work, they would be providing ample firewood to keep us warm). the bathtub is a nice idea, but it leaks and because it is cast iron, the hot water became very cool very fast. ithe hot water heater for the cottage is small, so if you want a hot shower, make it a quick one. If you have dogs, it's probably a good place, but other than that, it is just ok. we come here at least once a year, but will not come back to this place.

This guest stayed in our Fuchsia cottage. The bedroom is in the back of the cottage which does look have windows looking out to guest parking however the front of the cottage has a full wall of windows with a beautiful ocean view. The bed is indeed a Queen bed - we will mail the guest the invoice from the mattress as they were replaced new this year to confirm that it is not a double. Of our 19 rooms / cottages 12 have King Beds so if our guests prefer a larger bed they have ample choice. We have staff on call 24 hours and we were never informed of a leak with the tub, lack of firewood or problem with the hot water capacity. All of these issues could have been addressed if we had been informed of the problem. We do have a large wheelbarrow behind this guests cottage that is stocked with wood for guests to help themselves if they prefer not to call the front desk. Our property is historic and for $210 a night having the privacy of a stand alone cottage with a full kitchen, ocean view and wood burning fireplace is a value and very popular with our guests. Many of them love the classic touches of authentic claw foot tubs, woodburning fireplaces etc. However we do have many more modern rooms for guests that want a more polished experience. We work very hard to provide an exceptional experience for our guests. Unfortunately we can only address what we are informed of if somehow expectations aren't met.

Our 9 year old daughter is ready to go back. The dogs were welcome with a goodie basket, and there was plenty of off leash area. The .3 mile stroll to the beach is a hairraising hike along the narrow shoulder of Highway 1, not a place to walk with kids and dogs. Once at the beach it is one of the prettiest coves around. The hotel rooms were very clean. Most people have dogs, and they are allowed in the checkin area. If you don't like dogs, this may not be the place for you. The carpets are a sensible commerical carpet which is easily shampooed and kept clean. If you are looking for a romantic getaway B&B with costly antiques, this place might not be for you. If you are looking for a cozy room, with beautiful ocean views and welcoming hosts, you'll have the time of your life.

From the moment we arrived, we loved being at the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek. Lovely balance of unspoiled nature, magical charm and luxury. There is a terrific creekside path behind the dog lawn; and the watching the sunset from the hot-tub was almost surreal in its beauty. We stayed two nights in the Garden Cottage: lovely little private deck, large bathtub, warm, comfortable bed. I wish we could have had at least two more nights. There is so much to explore. But clearly the people made our stay absolutely wonder-full. We had two fantastic bodyworkers – Christine and Linda; Maureen and Steve were so accessible and kind and personable; kitchen staff was helpful and attentive. We were invite to share birthday cake with them since it was Linda's birthday. We felt so taken care of. They made great dining recommendations and reservations for us. We loved it. Thanks to all the staff at the Inn. We'll see you again. - M Hartwell, Palo Alto, CA

You will not be diappointed with the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek. My husband grew up in Northern California and we made a trip to mendecino in 2006. We stayed in the summer in the Tansy with our then one year old. She loved it so much she didn't want to leave. At the time there was a few mini donkey out the back who she thought must belong to her.
The rooms are well maintained and historic in nature. It is out in the country and has awesome views of the Pacific. We loved the homemade breakfast! It was so refreshing to not to have prepacked Costco muffins for breakfast.
Personally, I appriciate that this is a one of a kind place to relax. It has a warm, homey feel that most hotels lack.
We were so enchanted with this place we are bringing my parents back with us this summer.

“DO NOT STAY, rip off artists”

I, female, booked the stay less than 24 hrs in advance, getting a super discounted deal, for 4 nights. Since it was less than 24 hrs, Maureen, owner, said, 'since it's less than 24 hours I won't advise you of our cancellation policy as it doesn't apply'. I said 'ok'.

We were in Eureka at the time at Best Western. We drove down to this place, got there about 7 p.m. I guess. Checked in, went to our little room, called Van Damme. Upon entering it was pretty. The problems with the room...are countless. There was no bulb in the overhead light over the small table. Hubby had to go get another and put figure how to put it in as it was over his head, they had no one to do it. The drapes did not close all the way. The shower had NO water pressure, even I, who puts up with a lot of stuff, decided not to wash my hair as there wasn't enough water pressure to get it out, besides the fact that there wasn't enough hot water. It was a little better than tepid. [hubby took shower first].

They have a gas fireplace in the room, that sits on a raised
brick 'hearth'. This is situated right at the entrance to the bathroom. BAD judgement to put it there. Both of us tripped over it on the way to the bathroom and I stubbed the arch of my foot ON the corner of it on the way back from the bathroom in the middle of the night.

There was no coffee for the in-room coffee pot.

The bed was very uncomfortable. It was way too soft and lumpy.
the toilet paper was 1 ply.
The 'hot tub' was ALL THE WAY UP a hill. About a quarter of a mile away we were told. WHAT????
And apparently this is a dog friendly place. We did not know that. If I had, I would definitely not have stayed there.
The dog in the next room decided to start barking at 6 a.m. A time I do not wake up at on vacation. Where WERE the owners????

we had gone to Maureen in the morning to cancel the rest of the reservation and she said we would have to pay for the whole thing unless they re-rented the room. That is ludicrious! We got it last minute, and there were so many things wrong.

Maureen, not a nice person, was adamant. So were we.
Husband was taking care of this, instead of me.

So we go to breakfast in their dining room. The only thing offered was poached eggs. This, for a B&B. I have NEVER been to a B&B with such crummy breakfast food as poached eggs with cajun seasoning. I hate poached eggs. So they bring them, I tried, but couldn't eat them. She comes over and asks if I would like scrambled eggs. Better than nothing I think to myself. So yes, she brings those. However, on the parsley that decorates the plates, there is something dark. Oh, I dismiss it in my mind, thinking it's just.....whatever. I didn't want to make a big deal of it.
Til it moves. nooooo, I think...it didn't move. I must have just moved my head wrong. it moves again. I take my fork and pull it off the parsley.

Well Maureen decided she wouldn't charge us for the three nites when husband brought her the snail on the plate. Funny how things work out.

However, because husband was taking care of the stuff going on, she tells him she is going to charge him full price for the room, EVEN THOUGH I MADE THE RESERVATION according to THEIR website, less than 24 hours in advance, and got the special rate. It is 25% off the advertised rate for the room. Husband, not knowing he's being taken advantage of, signs it.
Upon disputing the charge with AmEx, Amex finds in their favor because husband signed the charge.

I definitely would not advise you staying there. Take the snail off the plate, take the barking dog away, take away the crummy food, these can all be fixed.

You STILL have the theft of our money, which means the owners are not people most travelers, let alone anyone else, would want to deal with; you have a bad sleeping experience, you have no hot water and no water pressure.

And you have sore feet in the morning, not good when on vacation when you do a lot of walking.

This review contains several inaccuracies which I would like to point out for future readers and then I will address the guest's complaints.

Our beds are extra firm - top of the line mattresses all purchased within the last 24 months we add to this a down feather topper that most guests rave about. If a guest prefers a firmer sleeping experience we can remove the down topper or replace it with a synthetic alternative.

Our Inn is situated on 9 wooded acres overlooking the pacific. Our hot tub is at the top of the property affording it beautiful ocean views - it is not 1/4 mile away.

Our fireplaces in the rooms are situated so you can see them from the bed. Most guests have no problem navigating around them.

All pet owners staying with us are required to sign a pet policy that informs them that their dog is welcome on the property but only if it does not disturb other guests - again we were never informed of their problem.

Our breakfast includes many choices - we have fresh baked scones, muffins and sweet breads - cereals, frech fruit, oatmeal etc so there are plenty of choices if a guest does not like our hot entree that we offer each morning. We tried to accomodate this guest who didn't like Eggs Benedict (not poached eggs with cajun seasoning) because she didn't like poached eggs. We have an organic herb garden that we use in our kitchen for both seasoning and garnish. Because we don't use harmful chemicals there is an abundance of wildlife on the property including quail, chipmunks and oh yes snails. I removed the offensive "organic protein" option and offered to get her another plate.

Regarding the maintainance and other issues regarding the room the guest never once informed any staff (which are available 24 hours) of any issues and complaints. We strive to have all of our rooms perfect on check in however we always address guest concerns or issues promptly if we are informed.

When the husband of this reviewer informed me he wanted to leave he made no mention of any issues other than his wife found the bed too soft. I offered to remove the feather topper or switch them to another room however he said no the area isn't what we expected. I informed them that they were responsible for the resevration unless we could rebook the room - he had signed our cancellation policy on check in and had informed them upon making the reservation - despite the reviewers claims to the contrary.

He then returned and said OK we'll stay. Again NO mention of any room issues. When the snail arrived he then returned and said his wife had changed his mind. We then agreed that I wouldn't charge him for the 2 nights but he'd pay full price for the first night.
He was happy with this agreement and signed the refund slip. We did not rip him off.

His wife (the reivewer) called about two weeks later claiming we had decived her husband. I explained this wasn't the case but she would not accept that.

We are not thieves and hopefully the multiple positive reviews we receive regularly speak to the fact that this is not how we treat our guests.

If anyone would like to personally speak with me personally regarding any concerns you might have after reading this review please contct Maureen - I am the owner at 1-800-731-5525.
