We were in Long Beach last week (mid-Oct) for a 3-night Royal Caribbean cruise out of Los Angeles Harbor. Since we were arriving a day before embarkation, we needed a place to stay. After reading the reviews of this Super 8, we decided to give it a shot.
The hotel is conveniently located to most everything one might need access to in Long Beach. The area seemed also seemed safe and well lit.
Edwin, the infamous manager, checked us in on the day we arrived. We were there by noon, a few hours before check-in, but Edwin found an available room (an upgrade, no less) to accommodate his early arrivals.
Our room was no frills, but it had all the basics that we would need, including a small kitchen with a microwave and refrigerator. Things were very clean and in working order. We had a shared patio/walkway that overlooked the courtyard which included a pool, hot tub, and sauna. You could also catch a glimpse of the Pacific Coast Highway. Fortunately, we didn't have an issue with the traffic noise.
Breakfast was certainly a notch above the standard continental that one can expect to find at a Super 8, but it was mainly starches (cereal, pastries, etc.). There were also some bananas and apples on hand, but no yogurts, skim milk, or other healthier food options. Juice and coffee could be had as well. But the meal served it's purpose and we were happy.
On a related note, Edwin recommended some good food choices near by. Polly's Bakery, which is right around the corner, is a good, affordable place to eat. It reminded me of a diner like Perkins, but even better quality. Lots of tasty food and fresh pies. For some evening entertainment, take a 10-15 minute drive down to the Long Beach Harbor area. There were many restaurants there - try the Yard House, but beware of the long waiting lines. The harbor itself is nice to stroll, grab a bite, and people watch.
Overall, this Super 8 restored our faith in the chain. Edwin's customer service was top notch from start to finish. We would definitely recommend this hotel - especially for the frugal traveler.
