We stayed here for 3 nights thinking that this motel may be kitchy-cool-we were so wrong. When I booked the room I asked for a room with a balcony overlooking the pool and was told there was one availiable but when we arrived we were given a room with no balcony. The manager apoligized but there were no more rooms available. Also when we arrived at 4 pm our room was still being cleaned so had to wait downstairs with all of our luggage.
When we entered the room and looked around we realized what a mistake we had made-the air conditioner was framed to the wall with unpainted wood and there was a hole in the ceiling where a pipe went through but it looked as though it had been punched through with a hammer. The closet doors were falling off and the tile at the bathroom entrance was all broken and crumbling with dirt and dust surrounding the broken tiles. The toilet seat was cracked and there was a big black filthy toilet plunger in the corner. When I opened the drawer next to the bed there was a food and condom wrapper in there! There were inexplicable holes drilled through the top of the large dresser too. The first morning there was no hot water and I had to take a cold shower. The couple on the other side of the wall screamed and cussed at eachother every night and all morning.

The coolness of this hotel only goes as far as the googie sign in front, beyond that this motel is a dump. When I got home I felt as though I needed to decontaminate everything that I had brought with me.

I stayed here in March with English relations, we had 2 rooms. My cousins were excited to stay in Hollywood and loved eating their breakfast outside near the pool each morning. Other guests were friendly and exchanged ideas; and the owners were helpful. After reading the reviews, I looked for problems. I could not find anything serious--I only found some peeling paint in the bathroom and the smoke alarm fell off the wall. I have since discovered that the rooms we stayed in were redone. The location was convenient and we felt safe. I was driving a Jeep and did not have any problem parking. The breakfast included cereal, granola bars, sweet rolls, OJ, hot chocolate, coffee, probably more that I don’t remember. We thought the breakfast was a nice bonus. I live in So Calif and would stay here again. If you are looking for the cookie cutter chain hotel you will not want to stay here. If you like a cute, clean, vintage, friendly place . . . then this is the place to stay. We all agreed that we were happy we had chosen this hotel. Vintage places like this will become harder and harder to find . . . so stay here while you can!

Have read quite some negative reviews after i booked the place. anyhow, i simply think tis is one of the nicest place i've stayed. it is a simple cozy-looking motel room, fully furnished with the basics. we got a king non-smoking. bed is comfortable. we got free 24h wireless access for our stay which we used some to get some road directions. everything looks clean and neat. room is a bit small tho to hv good walking space or fit in more than 3big luggages.

they hv free parking but no self-laundry facility.

the big minus is tat it is a no-no to walk back on your own after 9pm on the hollywood blvd. even tho main road is litted with cars, you do not know who's lurking in the dark buildings. we walked back abt 9plus after a movie and the streets was quiet except for the vehicle traffic where we get a few loud rowdy drivers. few locals were makin their way home on the streets.

summary, we will still return to stay except tat we will choose to drive if gg out late to hollywood blvd :-)

My friend and I took a trip down to SoCal for her 20th birthday. We went to Disneyland one day and I wanted her to be able to do a bunch of SouthernCalifonia tourist-y things the next day. So I searched around Hollywood for hotels. We're both young and broke, so the Hollywood Downtowner was the most appealing, of course, based on it's super-cheap rates [especially in comparison to the rates of surrounding North Hollywood hotels].

I was definitely a little leary. Even though I fell in love with the look of the Hollywood Downtowner, after I read through EVERY review I could find... I got a little nervous. Too many reviewers painted this hotel to be a bedbug-ridden, stain-covered, blood-on-the-walls and vomit-in-the-stairway place in the middle of tons of criminal activity. And we were two twenty-year-old girls that were going to be arriving in the middle of the night. Oi.

I was so enthusiastically satisfied with this hotel. The staff there are amazing. So friendly, personable, and helpful. You become friends with them instantly and feel comfortable with your stay as soon as you check in.

Obviously, the accomodations are what they are for a $60 hotel room. Nothing too fancy; you've got pretty much the bare minimum... but who spends that much time in the hotel, anyway? You've got a clean, comfy place to sleep. And a high-pressure showerhead! It looks like a crummy showerhead... but it delivers some power! Such a nice change from most hotels. And if you're lacking in anything during your stay, again... the staff is super friendly and more than willing to accomodate what you need.

The place has character. It's appearance is like something right out of a movie. Again... there's not much to your actual room, but it's a fantastic place to stay and we have absolutely no regrets. Not much for breakfast [cold/hot cereals, some fruit, packaged danishes, milk, coffee, and orange juice], so don't expect some grand breakfast rollout in their tiny lobby.

I highly recommend the Hollywood Downtowner Inn to EVERYONE traveling on a budget... and to anyone looking to stay in a place with some character and great staff.
