I am convinced this is the place Jim Morrison stayed when he penned the line, "The cars hiss by my window like the waves down on the beach." The road noise is incessant & brutal. I will also corroborate that the walls are paper thin. I will add that the off-angle design of the rooms (which does do a nice job capturing views of the ocean) only acts as a series of sound funnels. It is amazingly loud - louder than it should be considering the distance off the road. If you want a decent night's sleep, this is not the place. Even my 19-year old son who I was traveling with will agree.
I am, however, trying to be fair w/ my 2-star rating. The place has a certain minimalist retro charm. It is sparsely decorated, including a plastic alarm clock that was undoubtedly picked out at Dollar General. Plastic cups in the bathroom. A metal wire rack for a closet. One small photo on the wall along w/ a decent flat-screen. The bathroom is small but efficient with a nice sized walk-in shower. The pool is a postage stamp, but it is private and considering the motel is not on the beach side of the PCH, it is nice to have. Add it all up and it's not exactly the Ritz, but, still, it all works if you're comfortable with a revamped beach dude motel. The best I can say it is that it looks like it belongs in a Tarantino movie.
Last thing I'll say is some reviewers have lauded it as "cheap." Cheap, I guess, like everything else, seems to be relative (especially in Malibu). At $250 a night, I can live w/ no pictures on the walls and plastic chairs, but I'd like to be able to sleep. If my son chooses Pepperdine I'll be choosing the Malibu Beach Inn or something in Santa Monica when I come to visit.
