“Convenient location, rooms a bit small, though”

MacCallum House

5 Jul 2008

My husband and I stayed there over Memorial Day weekend, and the weather was pretty good, although a bit overcast. The MacCallum House is very conveniently located, within walking distance to the entire (small) downtown area. The breakfast included with the room is extremely good, with a variety of choices from the menu (the restaurant also serves the public, not just the hotel guests). You also receive a $7/per person/per day credit for the bar or restaurant, which is nice, since the restaurant for dinner/drinks is a little pricey. These amenities help defray the cost of the rooms, which are high, but actually a bit less than others in the area (hey, it is Mendocino, after all).

The property is beautifully landscaped and apparently includes the main house, several cottages (where we stayed) and another section a block or so away, according to the website, which we didn't actually see. Parking was a bit tricky, untill we figured out we could park in the back right next to our cottage since it was unmarked in the back.

Overall, it was a nice stay. The only thing I could say that is partially "negative" is that our room was pretty small (the fireplace, while welcome, made the room even smaller). We did have a hot tub in the back yard, however, there was no access directly from the room to the tub, i.e., we had to go out through the front door to get to the enclosed, gated hot tub area. This is not really a big deal, but I think it would have been nicer to have direct access from the room so we didn't have to parade around the common areas in our swimsuits.

But I shouldn't complain too much, because Mendocino is just beautiful!

“will not stay there again”

MacCallum House

20 Jun 2008

My husband and I have stayed there many times over the last 4 years, and most of the time we have really enjoyed ourselves. However, the last stay was terrible. I feel that the B&B is nickle and diming everyone, the fees for your pets keep going up, and the rooms keep getting worse for ware--shutters broken, TV so high it gave us a neck ache, beds WAY too soft, stains on the carpets, etc. We very nicely asked to be move to another room, and the only choices we got were lesser quality rooms, or move several more times over our 5 day stay. Considering we have stayed there at least 8 times in the last 4 years you think that they could have accomodated us better! Also, I got the WORST massage of my life there, and when I reported this to the manager, NOTHING was done. i.e. too bad. This is certainly NOT what I expect from a supposed high quality B&B. They would also not give us a refund for our last night stay there when we asked to check out 1 day early. Only credit. so that we can come back and feel even more frustrated the next time.

“Terrible Room and Bed”

MacCallum House

19 Jun 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

We were very disappointed in the MacCallum House last week. We stayed in dirty and dingy Room 12, Lily's Loft.
The bed was saggy and soft. It was an old mattress on a piece of plywood, so it did not even fill the bedstead. The softness of the mattress made us feel like we were sunk down in holes all night long. Not the sort of bed we expected in a highly rated property, and not comfortable for sleeping. The only chair in the room was upholstered in a soiled brown fabric, and the throw pillow in the chair was so worn feathers proturded from multiple places in the fabric. The linoleum in the bathroom was cracked and peeled back, exposing the floor underneath.
MacCallum House no longer serves wine and cheese, so there was no "Meet and Mingle" with other guests. Instead we were given wooden tokens for a $7 discount in the bar or restaurant. The bar opens at 5 PM and the featured wine of the day last Wednesday cost $8. Were we told at check in and in printed literature in the room to be sure to leave a gratuity if we used the token in the bar.
Breakfast was fine but not special. We were told 3 times (at check in, at check out, and when we were seated) to be sure to leave a gratuity for the waitress who brought our "complementary" breakfast.
The flowers were indeed lovely and the setting is beautiful, but neither of these can make up for the dark, dingy room or the miserable mattress. We stayed at the Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo the next night and it was perfect - very clean, lovely furniture and a great bed to sleep in. Avoid Lily's Loft, Room 12, at MacCallum House.

“Loved MacCallum Village Inn!”

Recently spent 3 days in the Village Inn just a short walk from the main building. It was a marvellous quite place with pretty gardens and very comfortable beds! We felt we were 'at home'.

Breakfasts taken at the main house were excellent (included in the price with no restrictions) and we also enjoyed a good dinner in the restaurant.

For a change in dining try Restaurant 955 on Ukiah Street, friendly staff and wonderful food!
