We recently visited Brewery Gulch Inn with some friends and loved our accomodations, the Inn, our hosts and the great food and wine. The price of $222 including tax seems steep until you factor in the free dinners and breakfasts we received. The food was outstanding! All of the rooms had nice views.

The appetizers are set out at 5:30 - we had a wonderful mussel and crab seafood gratin, tomatoes w mozarella and pesto, shitake mushroom and brown rice risotto, shaved brussel sprouts sauteed in butter w shallots and creme brulee for dessert.

For breakfast, you have your choice of 6-7 different things as well as a fruit tart. A variety of coffees, teas and fruit juices (including mango lassie) complete your breakfast.

There are books, games and an enormous library of DVDs on hand in case of bad weather.

We stayed at the Brewery Gulch Inn in the Lookout room and agree with most of the reviews on TripAdvisor. The Inn is exceptional and we definitely will return in the future. I don’t quite understand the one star review posted on here earlier, but I suppose you can’t please everyone.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon and were greeted with a friendly smile by the front desk attendant. All of our encounters with the Inn’s staff during our three night stay were outstanding. They were all extremely friendly, warm and welcoming. The review earlier alludes to a bit of homophobia on the part of the staff, but we (a gay male couple) were treated with the utmost professionalism and respect by everyone – from the owner, to the housekeepers, to fellow guests. Everyone was very friendly and very willing to provide their tips and thoughts on restaurants, sites, etc.

The common areas of the Inn were beautiful and well maintained. The great room was comfortable, with plenty of seating. There was always a nice supply of coffee, tea, water, and fresh baked pastries available. There was an extensive DVD collection for guests to choose from, as well as books and board games.

The room itself was also beautiful. As with most everything else at the Inn, it was done very simply, but very well. The room was very inviting, with comfy leather chairs and a nice bed. The linens in the bedroom and bathroom were nice and soft. I liked the small touches that made it really seem like we were guests in someone’s home as opposed to nameless faces at a larger hotel. Yes, the television is small, but who goes to Mendocino to just sit in the room and watch television? I can do that at home.

And then there’s the food, which was, in a word, outstanding. We started with the wine and hors d’oeuvres hour the first evening we were there. We didn’t know what to expect, having been to our share of free cocktail receptions at hotels where they have like 2 selections of wine and some goldfish crackers. Any expectations were blown away. There was a nice selection of wine, probably about 6+ selections to choose from each evening, and they varied each evening we were there. All were from local vineyards. There was also a selection of locally brewed beer. The food was amazing. It was all fresh, flavorful, and plentiful. It certainly wasn’t spinach dip and some salsa. Instead, we were welcomed with pasta, chicken, salads, and other small plates. It would have been easy to make a meal from the appetizers, but we didn’t want to miss out on the great restaurants in the area, so we just made sure that we didn’t eat too much and we had late dinner reservations each night.

The breakfast was a wonderful feast. There was a pretty full menu with everything from yogurt & granola to eggs & bacon. The bacon! It was probably the best bacon we’ve had. I think it was homemade. The bread pudding French toast was also amazing. I kept thinking about it during the day and I wish I had a recipe. The service was superb as well.

And some final notes… The Inn is indeed on the east side of the highway, so there will be some noise from traffic and such. It doesn’t necessarily obscure the view of the cove, and the noise wasn’t intolerable. We had our windows open during the day and while we slept with no problems. Also, our room didn’t have a deck, but I think that most of the other rooms do. I’m not sure that paying for a deck during a winter stay is a good idea due to cold temperatures and rain, but certainly something to consider if we go in the warmer months. All in all, an excellent place to stay and one of those few places where we will make it a point to always stay in the same place when we return.

Brewery Gulch Inn would be a 6 on a scale of 1 to 5. The ambiance and beauty of the Inn is enriched with a soul of its own. It's impossible to enter without feeling the embrace. The personnel go above and beyond to make your stay the best it can be, and the rooms, breakfasts and evening hors d'oeuvres are too good to describe. Guy, the owner/proprieter, knows the right way to run an Inn - We're happy we made the right choice of lodging during our first visit to Mendocino from Wisconsin. We'll be back! Thanks for a wonderful time.

As with most things in life, what we like depends to a great extent on what we have already experienced.
Laurie and I have been to many special places in our almost 20 years together.
From wonderful highland inns like Monachyle Mhor, to the vaunted Seven Gables in Pacific Grove.

Every great place has it's own reasons for the claims to it's fame, this place, this wonderful place, has many.
As Laurie commented, "do these people just go out and find the best, regardless of price?"
Check their towels, pillows, beds, accessories.
Though I'm not sure of the shopping orders, I am sure that Guy and the staff always have the eye open for whatever is better, so they can have it for you, their guest.

Someone else commented and favorably compared the Brewery Gulch Inn with the Four Seasons elite hotels. The comparison is well made, with the addition that you will feel much more at home with these wonderful people.
The food,
Oh, the food!
There is no place that will delight your sense of taste more than this place.
The chef, and that is the correct term here, creates some of the most delectable dishes you have ever eaten, and does it both morning and each afternoon at wine time. Even the hors d’oeuvres are both seductively good and plentiful, Guy mentioned that some people don't bother going to dinner after this.
Count us as another of the group.
Wines of exceptional quality, served in copious quantity, alongside wonderul things like fresh red pepper hummus, and beef tenderloin and local greens stir fry. And I haven't even started on breakfast, as simple as fresh made yogurt parfait, with the best and most unusual "millionaires" bacon you ever eaten, to eggs benedict on fresh spinach and fresh herbed salmon patties.

I see I've gone on much too long, but I haven't even touched on what is truly best about this place.
The people, From Toni, or Margi, who greats you, and Toni's warmth of heart that shows in everything she does for you, to the kitchen staff who serve you these delights, the people make this your very special place you will want to return to again and again.

Guy is the owner, the creator, of this endearing experience, he is also a most generous host with all that he has assembled here.
If you are someone who notices details of quality, you wil find that I am indeed leaving out so very, very much, but then, I'll leave that for you to write my friend.

This bed and breakfast is worth every penny. It’s run with the intimacy of a bed and breakfast yet the professional attention you would expect from a first class hotel such as the Four Seasons.

I don't understand the "one" previous negative review because this place is spectacular. We loved everything from the cozy, yet classy decor to the little "extras" that set the stage for a relaxing get-away. Even though we live 150 miles from Mendocino I would tell people to fly across the country to stay at this gem of a place.

After a long drive from San Francisco we were welcomed into our beautiful room. We relaxed into the huge leather chairs next to the lit fireplace (which was placed underneath a flat-screen TV.) The bathroom was an indulgence in itself. It was outfitted with a huge jacuzzi tub, thoughtfully accompanied by bathtub salts, bath gel and every other toiletry you could need (plus a full-sized hair dryer).

The room was amazing but we loved the welcoming feel of their main lobby where an assortment of books, magazines, and board games could keep you occupied for hours while sitting next to their huge roaring fireplace. Or you could just admire the view of the pacific ocean while sipping the wine thoughtfully provided, for free, during their 5:30PM wine and hors d'oeuvres hour.

Another thing that sets this place apart is their hospitality. The only time I've seen this level of lavish thoughtfulness was at the Four Seasons. They treat you like a privileged guest and do not nickel and dime you for ANYTHING. The nightly 5:30PM cocktail hour with scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and 6 different types of varietals is just one example. The free breakfast each morning blew us away. We could choose from a full menu of amazing breakfast plates or just grab a cherry scone and a cup of tea.

Our last night we helped ourselves to one of the free DVDs offered in the growing 300+ DVD collection. This was complimentary, of course.

This place is phenomenal and the owner, Guy, is part of what makes the place so amazing. You can tell he has put his heart and soul into this venture and he really cares about the experience that his patrons have at the Brewery Gulch Inn. Thank you for an amazing weekend!
