My first trip to Mendocino, although I've lived in CA for over 10 years now....just returned last night. The Brewery Gulch Inn was just what the Dr ordered for a restorative B&B experience.
I must say, the website & subsequent photos do not do it justice. We booked it purely on the reviews we read here at Trip Advisor....and all the rave reviews were true, and then some!
The outside of the inn is very modest & not especially memorable, but the instant you open the lobby door, you are transported. Craftsman architecture but with a zen-like ambience. A lovely 'great room' lobby that is vaulted up to the 2nd floor ceiling with a gorgeous 4 sided fireplace in the middle. An amazing patio/deck that overlooks the lovely landscaping, with Pottery Barn/Restoration Hardward like patio furniture, all facing the beautiful cove.
Our room was perfect. We stayed in the Raven. A corner room upstairs with windows on 3 sides, all of which opened for a refreshing breeze & the sound of frogs & crickets at night (which I love!). A nice flat screen tv mounted about the nice gas fireplace (we tried to watch one of the DVDs they have from an immense DVD/book library, but honestly, watching a movie there just didn't seem 'right' somehow)
The bathroom is nothing short of stunning. My shower there was almost a religious experience....amazing.
But as beautiful as the inn itself truly is, it's the little touches & the attention to detail that impressed us the most. I won't spoil it for future first time visitors, but suffice it to say, you won't be disappointed. A vast world apart from all the other inns & B&Bs we've visited in CA.
I hope to return again & again.
