This is everything your typical B&B is not -- modern, sophisticated, and fresh -- and it's all the better for it. We stayed in the Pacific View room, which was very nicely sized and outfitted with a small flat screen TV in the armoire, a large two-person soaking tub, separate shower, and a huge, plush king bed. The fireplace, though a nice touch, did not get any use, because a) the exhaust fan produced a bit too much noise and b) the room was warm enough without the fan. As some of the other reviewers have noted, the view of the Pacific is distant, but it is a view nonetheless.
The common areas of the Inn, which are very well kept, look like a Restoration Hardware catalog and include two separate sitting areas, one with a fireplace.
We thought about staying at an inn fronting the Pacific, but went with the Packard House because the quality of the rooms looked better, and just as importantly, the thought of staying at a place that required a drive anytime we wanted to eat or shop seemed rather silly. The Packard House is just a couple blocks from the restaurants, shops, and Mendocino Headlands park, it might be a better option for those looking for a bit more action. Nevertheless, those looking for more nature (read: stunning view) might want to look elsewhere.
We give this Inn four rather than five stars because we thought the quality of the breakfasts and wine hour was just not up to snuff. You have the option of taking a full breakfast downstairs at a communal table (which we had some reservations about) or a continental breakfast in your room. We ended up doing the full breakfast one day and the continental the other. Surprisingly, we found the continental to be a better breakfast than the full, though neither option wowed us, and seeing as this is a bed and BREAKFAST, one aspect of the experience was lacking. The wine hour, though serviceable, did not include anything more substantial than olives, crackers, wasabi peas. We have been to other inns of this quality that have more substantial offerings, like cheese and fruit.
Despite our incomplete satisfaction with the breakfasts, we would wholeheartedly recommend the Packard House for folks looking for a luxurious, modern inn in an old-fashioned town.
