Having been to Morro Bay about 20 years ago, and not happy with the accommodations all those years ago, I checked Trip Advisor before I left. The rave reviews on Ascot Suites were right on the mark! I couldn't find an appropriate room on their website so called the hotel directly. They couldn't have been more helpful and were able to offer an excellent rate. The continental breakfast was the usual but cereals were in individual boxes so that was great! Fresh grapes, yogurt, english muffins & bagels. The usual breakfast pastries were average (not that fresh), but then I've never found a breakfast pastry at ANY free continental breakfast that is worth writing home to mom about, so the pastry comment is not a criticism of this hotel; just all hotels in general! The receptionist offered an excellent suggestion for dinner (a chinese buffet on the Embarcadero). There is a giant chessboard in a small park about a block away. For the $38 permit fee (for a non resident of Morro Bay) you can have the chessboard the entire day (we only used it for 90 min; playing 2 games). Chessboard available Mon-Fri only, and reservations are taken so if you want to do that, contact the city's Parks & Recreation Dept to pay by credit card and make your reservation. It was right on Embarcadero and a lot of fun. The chess pieces are quite heavy so if you can't lift heavy weights above your head (they are stored on a second shelf) then it might not be for you. The hotel room was gorgeous and we had a nice view of Morro Rock. It had a fireplace and a balcony AND a jacuzzi. There was a window looking into the bathroom/jacuzzi from the room, but curtains on both sides made the jacuzzi very private...or not!...depending on your preference. The mini-bar in the room was not over-priced for alcoholic libations. I enjoyed a small bottle of zinfandel for only $3.50. The hotel is central to all kinds of shops and restaurants and the parking is nice; including some covered spots. You will love this place! They have a roof top hot tub. We didn't have time to try it but there were tables to also lounge around up there and enjoy the view. The 3rd floor has a bookcase with books you can borrow to read during your stay. We drove around town and looked at the other places and believe that Ascot Suites definitely was the best of all the others in that general area. Of course, they didn't have a swimming pool so if that is a big deal for you, keep that in mind. It was nice to have a pleasant room to stay in.
