Visitors to California's central coast will find after not too long that towns start looking alike. Morro Bay is certainly an exception. While the waterfront shops along the Embarcadero (where all the photos are from), sell a lot of the same stuff, the location is picturesque, the climate beautiful, and the seafood fresh. We ate at Giovanni's (look up the reviews), and the fish was delicious!

Most tourists frequent the area along the Embarcadero, and for good reason. There's not too much else in other parts of the town, other than residences, so Morro Bay can be easily done on foot. Most hotels are indeed a short walk to said tourism area.

Stayed at Morro Bay for 2 days (3-4 July 2007).

Morro Bay was not what we were expecting and is definitely not a seaside 'resort'. Apart from a few decent restuarants located on the seafront, Morro Bay has very little to offer the holidaymaker and feels rather 'soulless'. The weather is also very unpredictable along this stretch of the Pacific Coast due to the presence of sea mist/fog which lingers over exactly where you want to be i.e. the seafront/beach - very bizarre for July!

The rock is impressive and taken in isolation, would allow some impressive photos, but dont use a wide angle lens - just to the north is the local gas fired power station which has 3 rather tall chimneys - again, a very bizzarre vista for a seaside 'resort'.

IIf you're thinking of breaking your journey along the Pacific Coast highway between San Francisco and LA, take my advice and stay somewhere else!

Morro bay lies just off Pacific Coast Highway 1 in California, among all the more widely trumpeted stops en route this can easily be overlooked. I urge you to add it to your itineray. There are opportunities to view Whales, seabirds, go sea fishing and eat at a very good restaurant The Wind over the Waves where you can enjoy the locally caught sustainable seafood whilst looking at Morro Rock to try to spot the peregrine nesting there. As it is relatively undiscovered except by other Californians the prices are better than larger resort towns but the expereince is 5 star.

My wife and I recently visited the small fishing village Of Morro Bay, located in Central California about 2 hours North of Santa Barbara and 3 hours south of San Fransisco. What a Cute town, we spent 2 days just nosing around the waterfront looking in differnt shops and buying lots of nicknacks. They is a huge rock there called Morro Rock which is over 500 ft tall, and you can walk right up to it and touch it, there are no fences, although climbing is prohibited. This little town has lots to do, whether you like Kyaking, Sailing, Surfing or Shopping there is lotgs to do here. But our favorite was eating here. It seemed like every other shop was a resturaunt, from moderatly price to high end there was something for everyone. But what we wanted was good old fashioned fish and chips. As we were walking down the waterfront, we came across a fish market named "Giovanni's" . It has a small takeout window with a expansive menu from fish tacos, fish sandwiches, and hamburgers to clam chowder. We talked to a "Local" who was waiting in the fairly long line (about 10 minute wait, BUT WELL Worth IT!!) He said ALL the locals eat here and the wait is ALWAYS worth it, and the food has been the same for 20 years! So we decided we could wait for 10 minutes for this "hidden Treasure" We orderd the fish and chips, and it was HUGE!! There were 6 LARGE pieces of fresh cod and a large pile of fries for $7 we also ordered the Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl, and no kidding this thing was 8 inches around and 3 inches deep! They toast the lid of the bowl in butter so it was hot and cripy and you could dip it in your chowder. it was $5 these two items left teh two of us Stuffed! We like Giovannis so much we ate there the folowing day. Aside from the great ambiance and food Morro bay was a cute laid back town where we just strolled alond lasily for 2 days looking through shops and eating, looking at the fishing oats, feeding the birds, and watching the cute fuzzy sea otters floating around the bay. Our trip to california wouldn't be complete with a stop by Morro Bay..
