We left the harbor at 0' dark thirty and made bait just outside of the jetty. Luckily bite sized Mackerel were plentiful and we filled up the bait tank quickly. It was off to the islands we went in chase of Yellowtail. While crossing the channel, which looked like glass, a crew member spotted a Mako shark lurking the surface. With a quick stop and a toss of a Mackerel, it was game on! Great way to start the morning with a 5' Mako shark. Back on the gas we continued to San Clemente Island. Capt. Joe moved around the island looking for signs of life. We arrived at a spot that looked to be what he was looking for and sure thing, first drop of a Mackerel we were bit! The rest of the day is, how do you say, "history". We chased Yellowtail all day with great success. By the end of the day we were out of strength and ready to sample our catch.
If you're looking to experience some of Southern California's saltwater fishing, look no further. Capt. Joe is very knowledgeable and runs a professional, first class charter. Also, their boats are some the fastest around so it gives you more opportunity to fish and less travel time. I've been on many different charter boats in California, Florida, and Mexico and Bongo's is by far my favorite. I'll be booking with Bongo's again for sure!
